Every Kindred must have a place to safely spend the day, called Haven, but your character has invested additional time and resources into its development. A Haven can be almost any place your character may conceivably live in: a mansion, an abandoned train in a subway tunnel, a maintenance room in the sewers - anything you can come up with.

Special: Shared Several characters may share a Haven. To do this, allocate a dot in this Merit to a shared Haven after gaining it or pool some of the characters' dots together when deciding to share a Haven. If your character leaves the shared Haven later, their points are subtracted from the shared rating, but the character themselves gets back one point less than they invested.

When a character spends Merit dots or XP on Haven, they must choose how to allocate new Haven dots among three factors: Location, Security, and Size.

Clarification

There has been a long term misconception that the elements (Size/Security/etc) of the Sanctuary (Haven/Sanctum/Hollow) Merit are separate Merits. They're a single Merit. If you have Haven(Security) 2 and want to buy Haven(Size) 1, you need to pay 6 XP, not 2. Also, please note that we deviate from RAW by allowing Sanctuary (Security) to exceed 5. There is no limit on Security.

This is not a House Rule. It's been addressed by devs on forums, and is clearly documented by RAW example.[1]

This is a Vampire House Rule In the Edge of Darkness game setting, if a character takes a haven above ●● without the Right of Tenancy they are considered squatting, because of establishing a "haven of note" without the permission of the land holder.

Size

Dots Size
an equivalent of 1-2 rooms
●● an equivalent of 3-4 rooms
●●● an equivalent of 5-8 rooms
●●●● an equivalent of 9-15 rooms
●●●●● an equivalent of a large estate: many buildings, countless rooms.

Security

Each dot in Haven(Security) subtracts one die from any attempts to intrude into the Haven. Also, each dot adds 1 Initiative to the defenders in combat.

This is a Vampire House Rule Security Dots are not limited to 5

Location

Per the Average Vitae Pool House Rule, Each dot in Haven(Location) adds 1 Vitae to your character's average blood pool at the beginning of each scene.
