If a single shot is fired (or a single ranged weapon such as a knife is thrown):
- Subtract two dice for each combatant whom your character tries to avoid hitting.
- Subtract four dice for each combatant who is grappled and whom your character wishes to avoid.
If the attack succeeds, your character hits his intended target. If the attack fails, it misses everyone. On a dramatic failure, the Storyteller may decide that one of the combatants whom your character tried to avoid is hit. The ally hit is chosen randomly.
Note that these shooting into close combat rules apply to single shots or thrown items. They do not apply to autofire conducted with guns. Rules for hitting bystanders are covered under Autofire.
- Example: Emrys is in a melee with Ermac and Arthur, both of whom are friends of July. July tries to fire his pistol at Emrys from 15 yards away, and hopes to avoid hitting anyone else. Four dice are subtracted from July's attack dice pool to avoid hitting Ermac and Arthur, and a roll is made for the ranged attack. It succeeds with one success. If no successes had been rolled, no one would have been hit. If a dramatic failure had been rolled, one of Ermac or Arthru would have been hit, as chosen randomly by the Storyteller. Had Emrys, Ermac and Arthur all been grappling, July's shot would have suffered a -8 penalty.
