The iron fan, which is used in both Japanese and Chinese martial arts, is a delicate and graceful weapon that is often viewed as a secondary weapon. While this is the mainly case, masters of the iron fan can utilize it as an effective striking implement, whether the fan is closed, striking vital points upon body, or open where the metal ribs can slide across the eyes or throat with ease. Training in a fan makes it harder to be hit as it acts as a parrying implement and even distract foes with deft and strong handwork.

Dots purchased with this Merit provide special combat manoeuvres. Like all Fighting Styles, one must purchase them in order. So, a character can not have “Crane Defends the Nest” before purchasing “Unfurl the Iron Lotus.”

Note that only fans that have been strengthened for combat is eligible with this Fighting Style. Decorative, paper and prop fans do not have the durability to withstand the stress created when using the following techniques.

This Fighting Style was written and submitted by Forn Clakes

Unfurl the Iron Lotus (•):

One of the initial techniques a student of the iron fan learns is to how to open and close the fan while mid-flow of a technique, the result of which is a loud snap that is capable of causing a momentary distraction to an opponent if they were not expecting such a sound. The wielder makes a Dexterity + Weaponry roll with a penalty equal to his opponent's Composure. If successful, the opponent suffers a -1 penalty on her next action.

Crane Defends the Nest (••):

Your character knows how to impose the iron fan expertly between herself and danger, increasing her Defence by one in close combat.

Striking the Pearl (•••):

Your character knows how to target his attacks to vital organs and other vulnerabilities. Attacks made with an iron fan have Armor Piercing 1, and penalties to hit specific targets or body parts are reduced by one.

Distracting the Dragon (••••):

By drawing the iron fan across his opponent's field of vision, the wielder can bring a second strike to bear with either another weapon or even an unarmed attack with greater chance of hitting. The opponent's Defence is negated against this second attack. Drawback: This quick manoeuvre leaves the character somewhat more vulnerable against the next attack coming toward him. His Defence is counted as being -1 until his following turn.

Beak Spears Frog (•••••):

By focusing his strike, your character can kill or maim an opponent with a well-placed attack using his iron fan. An attack with the iron fan inflicts lethal instead of bashing damage. Drawback: Spend one Willpower point per attack. Note that this Willpower expenditure does not add three dice to the attack.
