Null Mysteriis is a compact of hunters based on a loosely-organized group of scientists and professionals who use science and logic to determine the truth behind the creatures of darkness. Null Mysteriis seeks to explain the existence and abilities of the monsters in the dark purely through science and logical reasoning. While some deny the existiance of any "magic" or "divine powers" most simply believe that the supernatural exists and can be understood with the scientific method.
History
Null Mysteriis takes its name from the Latin phrase "Nullum Mysteriis Processit" ("Out of the unexplained comes nothing"). It has its origins in the head of Jean-Pierre Brattel after he attended a Parisian Theosophist Society meeting in 1893. Disappointed that they were a religious movement, rather than trying to disprove religion with science, he left with new ideas. He wanted a purely scientific venue to explain the unexplainable, and soon after formed Null Mysteriis. By World War I, had hundreds of members across Europe and North America.
However, the two wars, along with other disasters, took their toll on the group's numbers. It wasn't until the 1970's that Null Mysteriis again became a force to be reckoned with.
Organization
By day, members of Null Mysteriis are members of the scientific and medical communities; it is in their "free time" that they devote themselves to the hunt for the supernatural and the experimentation to explain what they find. A minimal administrative staff puts together formal membership packets and helps maintain the organization's meeting places. The elected head of the group is the General Secretary; there are other officers as well, including a Treasurer.
Null Mysteriis is in a bit of internal crisis, however; a schism in methodology, between the Rationalists, who deal in more abstract thinking, theory, and careful approaches, and the Open Minds, who want more fieldwork and pseudoscience involved. There also exist the small group of Cataclysmicists, who are concerned with the rapid growth of the dark powers around them and want to take as much action as possible before the whole thing gets out of hand.
