House Rules ● Learning Disciplines & Devotions
Learning a new Discipline means forcing the power of the Blood to manifest in new ways that the character has never felt and can hardly imagine. No mortal can possibly help a character, either. The vampire absolutely must find another Kindred willing to teach her how the Discipline works. -- VtR, p.31
Disciplines
In Clan Disciplines
In-Clan Disciplines (including Bloodline) require no teacher.
Common Disciplines
Out-of-Clan (-not- including Clan 'signature') Disciplines can be 'activated' by a character without a teacher. Each month, the player may roll Blood Potency; once they attain successes equal to twice the total 'dot' level of the Discipline being activated, they may develop/purchase it. The player MUST have the XP required to purchase it before they can begin rolling, and it remains 'in escrow' until the Discipline development is completed. Having a teacher skips this requirement.
Clan 'Signature' Disciplines
Learning a Clan's signature Discipline always requires a character teacher. These are Auspex, Dominate, Majesty, Nightmare, and Protean. The teacher must belong to the respective Clan.
- They cannot be taken at creation and "back-storied".
- They cannot be taught by a Vampire who gained the Discipline through their Bloodline.
Bloodline Disciplines
Bloodline Specific Disciplines cannot be taught to non-bloodline members unless the text specifically states otherwise.
Character Teachers
Learning any Discipline from another character requires both characters to have been in play at least three months and the teacher to remain in play for at least three months after the student purchases the Discipline. If the teacher leaves before that, the purchase will be redacted - stricken from the sheet and XP refunded.
Devotions
Devotions may be developed by a character without a teacher. Each month, the player may roll Int+Occult*; once they attain successes equal to twice the total 'dot' requirement of the Devotion, they may develop/purchase it. The player MUST have the XP required to purchase it before they can begin rolling, and it remains 'in escrow' until the Devotion is completed. Having a teacher skips this requirement.
- Gangrel Clan Weakness does not apply.
