The history of Edna's Boarding House is one stained scarlet. Those familiar with local history will remember some of the details of the massacre that took place here a few years ago, when the owner, Edna Fritz, was found with twelve other bodies completely drained of their blood. In the gruesome aftermath of this horrible event, recent resident Betony Rue Jasons courageously took it upon herself to maintain the day-to-day operations of the boarding house, despite the fact that local authorities have never been able to solve the terrifying multiple homicide.
Unbeknownst to Sacramento's Finest, the mass murders were committed by the rogue Scarecrow Minister, Peter Milford and his Fetch (better known to members of the freehold as Skin'n'Bones and the Bogeyman), who were dealt with accordingly by the Tolltaker Knighthood. Ms. Jasons continued to run the Boarding House in honor of the deceased Mrs. Fritz, and has continued her tradition of hospitality by welcoming any members of the Lost community in need of food and shelter.
Spring in 2016, Betony Rue and her fellow Sovereigns took their leave from the Freehold, leaving control to those who remained, who then voted for their respective Sovereigns. Terri Nutkins' offer to run Edna's as its manager during Betony Rue's absence would be for naught. After three years Lady Salome came to call, the Truefriend's neglect of the Pledge Between them[1] had sealed the former Dread Lady's fate. Terri Nutkins was now, and forever more a part of the Fleshmart's Proprietress corpse tree Hollow[2].
Autumn 2016 Mhairi Ankaa was crowned Queen of Fear[3] and took control of Edna's. First as it's manager, then with the Death of Fairweather, and the shifting of the center of Sacramento's Freehold she gathered the money needed to move Sacramento's Witch House to the Funderland Amusement Park. Marketing it as a Haunted House for children, and a series of horror themed Escape Rooms for teenagers and adults, though sometimes as a special event, Edna's doors are opened for a Murder Mystery dinner.
Long after the Park closes and each of the attractions are put to bed, the Lost of Sacramento know that ever, as it has always been they might find a bed within Edna's for as long as they need one.
May of 2018, Mhairi Ankaa left the Freehold of Sacramento, leaving the keys to Edna's in the trusted hands of Coco Tascioni, who turned them over to Ingrid when the Wasp took her leave as well.
The next dread lord of Autumn, the fairest Rhodes Took ownership of Autumn's long standing stronghold.
When Rhodes disappeared the property passed to the wizened Anatole who was crowned Harvest king of Autumn at the Equinox of his season in 2023.
Harvest king Anatole and his only courtier a recent arrival Kray a giant of an ogre, met to discuss several topics one such being the future of Edna's as both had independently arrived at the conclusion that a haunted house at a theme park was not cutting it for the court of fear. They shared ideas and the ogre's grand plan was settled on and supported by the harvest king.
When Anatole departed the freehold in July of 2024 the paperwork and ownership was passed to the sole remaining Ashen courtier Kray who continues to set the stage for the grand plan they had schemed to revive the boarding house. In turn the Ogre was crowned the next dread lord of Autumn at the seasonal equinox of September 2024.
Leaving Funderland
As promised Kray Moved Edna's out of Funderland and the boarding house opened it's doors for business once again in it's new location on the 4th of January of 2026. Moving well south of funderland the giant has set up shop in a out of the way spot between the Sacramento river and North Stone lake, the isolation intended to further add to the reputation of Sacramento's Witch house. This undertaking of course only the first steps in an elaborate plan to bring the old boarding house back into it's terrifying glory.
A reasonable drive cuts into the exterior wall that boarders the new grounds of the Witch house, winding its way forward through the promenade of seasonally appropriate trees. Hawthorns and crab apples, overshadowed by silver birch.
To the rear of the imposing shadowy building and into a small orchard of apples and plums, of chestnuts and conkers, snaking blackberry vines trail and entwined with bushes of elder flower. Signs of frequent bonfires mare the ground in a central glade that the trees and vines and bushes seem to be planted central around. A small innocuous maintenance shed is hidden away in one corner obscured by branch, bough and shadow.
True to to form, and moved in meritoriously careful detail the boarding house itself. A towering red brick building, with windows on every floor stands quiet, as skilled at looming as the current owner. In the details of the brick work, the wood, the tiles, the multiple chimneys it is clear this was once a building of great worth and historic value, and that age leeches it's history into the presence of the place, the flickering of curtains across the shadowed veranda in the breeze could hide a figure watching, the creak of something settling could disguise the sound of approaching footfalls, the moments of expectant stillness stand heavy as if waiting for something to break them. This building has an air, an atmosphere, a character that only comes to those had had endured and witnessed a great deal.
The first floor plays host to the reception from which a room can be purchased for a night, a week, a month or how ever long the tenant is willing to pay for. The living room, Sofas and armchairs give space to socialize or listen to the restored old standing radio that graces one corner. The dining hall in which meals can be taken by any resident who prefers the traditional sit down at a table to eat and converse atmosphere. The reading room from which those who have finished dining can easily retire, the walls are lined with a vast and eclectic array of books (as many as could be brought by clearing out several charity shops stacks). In house laundry, and the famous (in certain circles) kitchen, door to the basement and a handful of guest rooms.
The second floor is given over entirely as would be expected of a boarding house to rooms of the single and double variety although each comes with it's own arm chair, desk and bookcase (empty). And a pair of fully equipped bathrooms that residents of this and the first floor need must share. The third floor is what Kray calls the V.I.P. floor every room here has it's own en-suite bathroom meaning there are fewer of them and they are Pricier, unless you are a member of the autumn court then this is the floor the key given to you by the king will find it's door, the rooms given over to the lost of the ashen court or if a deal has been made for one lost of the freehold are the best furnished of all the guest rooms, with specific needs such as size taken into account. The fourth floor and attic have been claimed and entirely taken over by the giant ogre, as his personal rooms. What he needs all that space for and what goes on up in the rafters of the Witch house remain a mystery to all but the ogre.
Autumn's Hallow
Kray has had a hard time maintaining the hollow alongside the necessary investments to get Edna's up and running as an independent boarding house once again and it currently is in a sorry state.
With a small sense of poetic irony when the handle to the basement is jiggled a certain way after knocking in a particular pattern the door opens to the Autumn commons.
A small room, that really wasn't a room, but an enclosed clearing. Thick trees reaching higher then mortal thought, with nary a fresh leaf in sight. The barren branches reach their skeletal hands and nearly blot out the sun. The moon however has no such restrictions its glow bright and seemingly free among the branches. Growing on one side of the clearing are a pair of branches, acting like arms and cradling tomes and scrolls, though only a few of them. Sadly all that remains on the Great Archive of Autumn.
