Galatea was a struggling student trying to attain her doctorate. Life was stressful enough- and her Awakening didn't help.
It took some difficulty adjusting, but after some quick tutelage she quickly realized the benefits of magic that can improve one's strength and mind. After grasping the basics of such magic (and getting over the moral quandary it entailed), school was a breeze. She attained a license as a Marine Biologist, and shortly after began working for a pretty good paycheck.
Not long after her dream-job, things started to become a bit fuzzy for her. Life was decent, sure, but Galatea felt it could be more. Ever since the Awakening, something had been building up and devouring the Thyrsus, scratching at her mind. The mages she associated with couldn't quite explain it, and a human psychologist's suggestions were of little help. When she couldn't take it any longer, she took a short vacation on the beach to make sense of it all- and discovered an Orphan.
The mage was stunning, and screamed something primal. Every word they spoke resonate with Galatea, answering all her questions. They promised to show her the answer, showing a boat. Against her better judgement, she got on and they sailed far enough way that prying eyes were no issue. A few circles drawn, simple rituals done, and her newfound friend completely shed the modern world- becoming something ancient and powerful as they struck the water. Galatea soon joined, though her changes were nowhere near as impressive. The rest of the day was devoted to understanding their words- this "Proteus," an individual Galatea felt she already knew, somehow. By day she learned, by night she swam. She extended her vacation, before eventually quitting her job for one closer to the beach (it paid less, but she didn't care).
Now, when she has the time, she goes out to sea and sheds her human skin. And when she doesn't, she spends hours studying animal shapes and forms, practicing with them in front of a mirror, trying to find a form the new Orphan knows belongs to her.
