During the clean-up of the Circle of Creation, a ghost from a lost wedding ring appears and latches herself onto the hierarch before urging the two mages to take her to her special place in Nevada.[1]
Summary
Two weeks after the Arrows had reclaimed the circle the clean up continued. The former cathedral seems so empty, especially with the memory of the bomb scare still hanging in the air.
Other memories drift through Animus and Joshua Morris, and the conversation turns to what West had done to the wolves weeks previous. Joshua calls out Animus’ wounded behavior, and is answered with the excuse of the stresses of position and power.
Joshua pulls out a small ring box[2]and shows it to the Hierarch, revealing that the ring inside had been spelled with Matter, Fate, and Time. When the Hierarch takes the ring to examine it more carefully, a woman dressed in a wedding dress is expelled from it and the band wraps itself around Animus’ ring finger.
The Thyrsus tries to remove the ring, as the woman gazes at him, a look of joy on her face. When Animus opens his eyes to the Twilight he begins to speak to the ghost, she calls him Jakob and names herself as Scarlett.
Joshua begins to ask Scarlett questions about her special place. “To the East? ... over the Mountains?”[3] After revealing where the her special place is, she questions Animus/Jakob’s fear of her and Animus begins to loose his sense of identity since Joshua is calling him Jakob as well.
Scarlett explains that Jakob promised that they would be together forever, but after the earthquake at the wedding in 1906, he began to ignore his words to her. Animus explains that the wedding happened over a century ago and that Jakob is gone, but she refuses to believe him. She tells Animus that ‘’he’’ is Jakob and that she just wants to go to their special place.
Joshua asks where the special place is and Scarlett gives that it’s about thirty minutes out of Carson, Nevada, and that Jakob found it after he awoke. They make the plans to spend the three and a half hours to get to Scarlett’s special place, should it still exist after a century.
