The practice of chiminage, offering a spirit a gift of Essence to gain a favor or coerce it into some action, is a long-standing part of werewolf culture. Offerings of chiminage are even integrated into many rites. This rite formalizes the practice, imbuing the act with spiritual significance that gives the ritemaster a subtle power over a spirit. Ithaeur often use this rite as a “carrot” to open negotiations, before employing the “stick” of banishment or the like.

Performing the Rite

The Ithaeur sets up an altar (which can be as minimal as a circle drawn in the dirt around a campfire to an elaborate construction of stone reminiscent of a church altar) with a source of flame on it. With a small knife or a claw, she carves off a piece of an object representative of the spirit to whom she is offering chiminage and places it in the fire. Intoning an offering of peace in the First Tongue, she spends a point of Essence to catalyze the offering. The spirit that is the subject of this rite must be at hand when this rite is performed.
