Time was up, he get to go out there. Arnoud stalked the area set aside for their battle and tries to get a read on his opponent, Walter. One of the many new vampires he’d met at Court. He didn’t really know all that much about the new arrival and had to glean what he could before they started while simultaneously concealing his own essence. He seemed calm, an expectant nostalgia on his face as he handled his rapier and moved about. Probably no novice, Walter.

Walter makes his way to the arena and unwraps the rapier. He's eschewed the padded armor; it was too much weight.

Arnoud doesn't really know what to expect from Walter but was determined to find out. After all, it was unlikely he would be too outclassed. He readies his rapier and the little dagger in his left hand comes up defensively. As soon as the starting signal is giving he seizes the initiative and launches himself forward in a flurry of misleading attacks seemingly finishing way too short but suddenly lunging forward in a simple yet powerful thrust. The blade plunges toward Walter who only partially deflects it, instead of striking the heart it very painfully glances across ribs.

    Arnoud rolls 9 to attack (Dex+Wea+Spec+Equip+Blood+Style-Defense4) (10 Again) 9, 8, 3, 3, 6, 7, 10, 2, 10, 5, 4 4 successes

Walter strikes his own blow in response. His footing, his thrust, all feel absolutely perfect. For a moment, he even feels a twinge of concern that he could seriously injure his opponent.
So it comes a complete surprise when Arnoud dodges the blow, leaving Walter thrusting into plain air.

    Walter rolls 7 to Stab ((Dex4+Weap(Rapier)4(+1spec)+Rapi2+Fenc1)(-5 def)) 4, 2, 5, 2, 3, 6, 7 failure

It wasn’t that Walter was bad, Arnoud could see that easily enough, it was just that he wasn’t familiar with Arnoud’s medieval stance and swordplay. And perhaps the dagger was throwing him off too. Arnoud wastes no time and immediately executes another thrust, trying to gauge how his opponent would react to the exact same attack. Walter fares much better and Arnoud hits him not nearly as painfully but still drags the tip of the sword from the sternum to the right leg. Walter’s close to the mortal limit.

    Arnoud rolls 9 to attack (Dex+Wea+Spec+Equip+Blood+Style-Defense4) (10 Again) 7, 2, 7, 10, 6, 5, 9, 2, 7, 1 2 successes

Walter takes the hit with a small grunt. He forces himself to make one last lunge. The tip impacts Arnoud's shoulder, hardly applying any force to it. Half a century ago, that would've been enough to win - but here, it was just another blow, and not a good one at that.

    Walter rolls 5 to Stab ((Dex4+Weap(Rapier)4(+1spec)+Rapi2+Fenc1)(-5def -2Wound)) (10 Again) 6, 8, 7, 5, 2 1 success

Arnoud curses himself for being hit but it was over and Walter knew it. Arnoud had sustained only a minor jab and with THIS! it was indeed over. Another solid whipping of the ribs and Arnoud retreats, watching Walter for any treachery. Kindred wouldn’t go unconscious from such attacks and thus Walter would have to yield but the victor should be clear to all.

    Arnoud rolls 9 to attack (Dex+Wea+Spec+Equip+Blood+Style-Defense4) (10 Again) 6, 2, 8, 2, 5, 9, 10, 3, 1, 6 3 successes

Walter backs off as well, both from combat instinct and admission of defeat. He feels a cold rage rise inside of himself, but pushes it down before it incites his Beast. His opponent had won honourably, and here was one of the few places where Walter felt that mattered. "Touche, to say the least." he admits. He walks back to the center, holding one hand out to to shake while the other held his fencing tool pointed away. "Perhaps we should do this again."

And as Walter admits defeat Arnoud realizes something. He hadn’t been holding back. He’d been completely committed to the fight. How much had he displayed of what he had hoped to keep hidden? Damnation, this always happened. He had to appear weaker from now on. Couldn’t let others think he was a threat or even just strong. Otherwise they’d descend upon him like the bloodthirsty monsters they were. For instance, the cold rage and the slight stillness of Walter’s body didn’t go unnoticed. Still there was no easy way out of it. The masked Arnoud took the rapier in his dagger hand and shook Walter’s hand.

“Agreed.” Arnoud said with a curt nod, currently unwilling to exchange more than the basic pleasantries. Releasing Walter he quickly made for the rest room. He needed a little time alone.

Twist glanced around at the mass of people crowding the ring. While it was indeed a bit dissorganized and hectic, she didn't see any anger in the faces looking toward the ring. Most of the noise was chatter and not angry fist fights breaking out outside the ring.

"I think it is going great from what I see" she replied with a reassuring smile at him.

At his question about what to learn she paused to think, her eyes scanning the room. What did she want to learn? She had been meaning to try and utilize the fact that she was on intimate terms with a dojo owner for some time now but her unlife had just been so busy. She was very good with the knive already and further improvements would come with her continued practice. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to learn something new...she would never loose her love of knives, but sometimes the very close combat required for them was just too dangerous-- even when using the larger blades as she often did. Maybe something that could pull from her knife skills? That would be a good place to start...still blade work but not quite. She could branch out from there. Her gaze fell on someone carrying a long padded blade. Yes, she was starting to like this idea.

She turned back to Neil and excited look in her eye, "Would you be able to teach me blade work? Fencing perhaps?"

Neil watched the current match -- two fencers -- as Twist speaks. One of them was very good. He felt a little thrill of anticipation as his final match crept up.

He turned back to Twist, catching the look in her eyes, and smiled, nodding. "Sure," he said, his smile turning into a grin. "That's one of my specialties." It was actually an exciting prospect, with her being a dancer. The way she had thrown the knife, also... maybe he could show her what he'd been working on.

"It's like dancing," he continued excitedly. "I'm sure you'll be great at it -- are you going to use it in a show?"

She'd also look so hot in nothing but a fencing jacket.

As Jayant hears his name called and that of his opponent, he heads to the ring, his kukri defiled with the padding wrapped around its hungry blade the same way a muzzle is kept on baying hounds. He silently sent it promise to taste blood before it is sheathed.

Standing in the ring wearing a pair of grey military bottoms and matching vest top, he goes bare foot, leaving his boots at the side of the ring and when offered the padded protection, he simply shook his head, the gesture accompanied with a smile. The Gurkha stands straight, all 5'6, wiry build of him, waiting for the one called Tam.

Tam stands on the edge of the fighting area and watches as her opponent, Jayant. She sees his padded weapons and realizes that they are very real weapons beneath the protection. She looks down at her practice baton, then she looks around.

'Jayant' doesn't seem the playful type, but this is a public forum, so it should be cool. He is a little guy, though. Falling Leaf always said the little guys are deceptively dangerous.

Tam steps into the fighting area to be acknowledged by the judges. She nods to Jayant.

Tam is dressed in sneakers, sweats, and a t-shirt. She has forgone the padding for this fight. She is lean, but soft looking, though, by her stance, she does appear to have some knife training.

    Tam's Initiative & Dodge

Jayant smiles upon seeing Tam but not in a mocking way. Anyone with the courage to enter combat such as this deserves all the praise and respect that can be bestowed. He gives her a bow before taking up a side stance, his right side facing her, chin tucked behind his shoulder for protection and right hand gripping the padded khukri that is being held at his waist, ready to attack.

    Jayant's Initiative
    Jayant's Initiative

With the speed of a striking cobra, Jayant rushes forward and lets his weapon swing, aiming for his opponent's torso, catching her in the ribs.

    2 Bashing

Tam exhales quickly, absorbing some of the blow.

    Damn, this guy is quick!

It was not a crippling blow, but it would have drawn blood. It would have been worse had she not been focusing on defense.

From his training, Jayant always understood the first blow was the most decisive. He certainly prayed to the Mother it would be on this occasion. As he finished his swing, still leading with the right leg, he brings his weapon to bear on Tam's other side, clattering it against the opposite ribs.

    2 Bashing
    2 Bashing

Again, Tam takes a shot to the ribs, getting through her defenses much the same way as before.

That calls for more training, girl, she says to herself.

The strike was similiar, though, and Tam is ready. As Jayant follows through, Tam hooks her wooden knife around Jayant's wrist and strips the padded kukri from his grip, sending the weapon flying. It nearly hits the referee 12 feet away.

    Disarm

Humph, Jayant thinks as he watches his weapon fly across the ring, a bemused look on his face. With a diving roll towards the ref, Jayant tries to recover his kukri, just managing to get his hand upon its grip as he comes up in a defensive position. He nods respectfully to his opponent, a technique he may have to consider learning one night.

    Recovering kukri
    Recovering kukri

As Jayant nods, Tam charges, pressing a very aggressive attack.

This guy is not just good, but fun, too!

She catches Jayant across the chest.

    3 Bashing

The blow lands solidly across his chest and Jayant can aready feel it welt, his dead blood curdling grotesquely beneath his training vest. He needed to press the advantage that his opponent had opened with her heavy strike and lunges forward with extra focus, striking her hard across the stomach.

    4 Bashing

Tam dropped to her knees and curled into a ball. She was conscious when she dropped, but by the time doc checked on her, she was incoherent.

    Conciousness

As Tam drops to the canvas, Jayant lowers his weapon, the ref calling for the bell. Crouching near her, he gives her a mixed look of respect and concern, and in a low voice simply says, "Thank you," before heading from the ring.

Leaving the ring, Jayant reads that he is next up against someone down as Nathan Smith. If he was being honest, Jayant was feeling quite good, having survived his first fight relatively unscathed but only knew it was due to his opponent's tactics mre than anything, and he was a realist. Many would say he was a glass half-empty kind of person but it was his way and he was content with it.

Heading to the toilets, Jayant forces some blood to heal the little welts appearing on his torso, hidden by his vest. Maybe he should use that padding next time.

Mateo smiles. "Yeah, theres still a use for us. Not too many blacksmiths around nowadays, mija, but we dont stuff for personal commisions, and for the SCA and shit like that. I personally specialise on medieval weapons, but I know how to make damn near anything that can be swung. Every once in a while someone asks my to make their sword or gun pretty, and have it customised, so I learned how to do that too. Grips, hilts, stuff like that."

Marcus heads over to get patched up as best he can before his next fight. The emotions rolling off of the crowd are intoxicating. He uses his battered state as an excuse to "accidentally" step on toes and bump into people as he makes his way through the crowd. He feeds on the anger he causes, feeling a bit better by the time he makes it to the Rent-a-Doc. Seeing John, he goes over to his fellow courtier and offers his hand on a fight well fought. "Alright? I feel like I should have gotten your license plate number before you left the ring." He grins sheepishly at the clockwork man as he waits his turn to see the Doc.

Justin finishes his last set of push ups. He was good an warmed up for the fight. He felt a little let down that he wasnt able to take on an even fight, indeed, he even had the advantage over this Marcus guy. Hmph. Too bad, but thats not his problem.

Justin looks up towards the ring, and starts walking toward it, ready to put up or shut up.
