The penance part was not gaining anything for herself for moving someone onto the path of righteousness. Since Mariel is completely self-centered, this was indeed a difficult and worthy thing for her to do.
She could have sold the baby, but instead has set it on a path to wreak future vengeance against sinners- either the baby's own father, or others who resemble Bad Dad. Mariel also didn't drink from the dude, and so denied her base nature and instincts, which is always a noble thing.
