"Let's see if they come to us," Tal suggested, hearing the infernal barking. She flicked on the light at the top of the stairs and then limped down to stand just at the base of the steps.

    "Hey, Mutts!"
she yelled into the darkness. "Come get the tasty intruders." Her pistol came up, muzzle pointed slightly down, accounting for the height of the beasts.

Hopefully they were chained. That would make things much easier.

Al's weapons came up, too, and he flicked his tactical lights on, aiming them down into the depths.

    Hold tight, be ready...

Sam gripped his knife as he watched their backs.

I gotta hand it to Tal, he thought to himself wryly, she is certainly fearless.

Sam wasn't sure about the wisdom of calling out vicious predators on their home turf, but he was oddly calmed by the fact that their resident Israeli valkyrie was the one doing it.

The barking sounds for several more seconds, frenzied and angry. Then the sounds fade, to a more restrained growling. Nothing charges up the stairs. A few beats of listening make you feel confident that they are not at the bottom of the stairs. That restrained growling... they could be confined somewhere. Or chained just out of sight in a perfect position to lunge at your leg when you descend. This place is run by some very nasty men...

    What do you do?

Alistair frowned. "Don't we have some sort of grenade-like distraction thing we could toss? What's it do, again?"

"Makes smoke. No sense in blinding ourselves more than we already are. I think we should just go for it. Try not to shoot me," Tal replied, putting the safety on her gun and tucking away in favor of her knife. Given the hard surfaces surrounding them she didn't want to start putting high velocity, ricocheting pieces of metal into the air, especially not when she might accidentally stumble over the dogs in the dark. The same dogs that might be menacing Diane right now...

She began to limp forward, into the Gulag.

Alistair nodded his agreement, following her down with his weapons trained and ready.

"Peek the corner carefully, just in case. Don't want them to get the jump on you."

Sam watched them enter the Gulag, wetting his lips slightly as he shifted his grip on his knife.

"You guys be careful in there. I'll make sure no one follows you in." He nodded to himself as he kept watch. "The minute you find her, I'll get Jodie and the van over here and we make a break for it."

Had he his choice, he'd hunt down the bastards who ran this place, but he knew that Diane took priority here. If there was one thing that made Sam sick, it was regular human beings who did stuff like this.

They don't even have the excuse of it being in their nature, he thought to himself angrily. At least a vampire is just trying to get by. At least a demon made of pure sin and can't act otherwise. Shit like this...there's no excuse.

Darkness presses in on Tal. The smell of the damp and something no doubt gone to mold wafts into her nostrils. The concrete steps make some scuffling noises as the two hunters descend into the darkness. The sound of the dogs has faded to a low, frustrated growl. The clack of nails on concrete is muffled. The dogs may not be an immediate threat.
After reaching the bottom of the staircase, two doors are visible about eight feet down the dark gray corridor, one on each wall. Another few feet beyond that and the corridor turns 90 degrees to the right, vanishing into darkness. An overhead light, identical to the one at the top of the stairs, hangs from a hook drilled into the ceiling about halfway down the hall.

The barking and snarling of dogs is clearly audible on the other side of the metal door, one of two within this complex to actually be padlocked. The animals scrabble at the door, their claws making a faintly metallic scraping. Occasionally one of the dogs will lunge into the door, clanging it loudly within its frame. If the door is padlocked- there may be something in there this yet to be seen mastermind is trying to hide. You will have to break the padlock - and deal with the dogs that are so excited to meet you.

[ooc - Tal does have the flash light that can be used as a bashing weapon in a pinch in case she wants to investigate the dark corners.]

"You know, if we were clever, we could jam the door mostly shut and shoot through the crack as the dogs try to push out without much risk," Alistair pointed out, his finger aiming at the door. "What do you think?"
