    This is continued from The Plan


    Sacramento is a city washed in the blood of its leaders. All for the mad unknowable design of those who wished for nothing at all. Jack O. Falley's was found in Curator Primoria's office, his body desecrated. Mike Tamwood's body was also desecrated to look like a perverted version of the Martyr of Saint Sebastian. Rosh's body also wracked with the insidious fecund power of the Void. Destruction felt on both sides and enough for even the Seers of the Throne to reach out to the Diamond under the guise of a shared hatred towards the Accursed.

    These names mean little to the motley of Magi who are following the trail of blood to its conclusion. One name, however, holds some sway: Triquetra. Guardian, Thyrsus, a member of the Sodality; her inner goddess was ripped down from the heavens in a spray of blood perpetrated by a shard of black tass. Her soul ripped out and held hostage, even now, along with the others.

    It is late at night (2:30 am) by the time the Magi have prepped themselves and rolled out, Animus leads the charge and sniffs out his lover's soul to a darkly quiet neighborhood in South-Eastern Sacramento. The Magi who see the world through the shard of pure creation can see the Dragon Line warp and twist in place as it shows its corruption the closer they get to a lonely area of vineyard country.

    A private drive is overgrown with bony branches reaching towards their cars, long black shadows, and the palpable feeling of desecration lingers just outside of the senses. The trees break and quarter mile from the break in the trees is a ranch house that has seen better days. The house's peeling paint, half fallen shutters, and general slouch visualize the depression the Land certainly feels. It barely holds itself up. The house itself, a victim of the financial crisis of a decade ago and taken up residence by the Cult of the Black Mirror.

    Asp was on high alert as they moved in cautiously toward the house, following Animus. Her Sights tingled with the combined, powerful magic on all of the Awakened around her. As she looked left, looked right and before her from her position covering the rear, the young Obrimos couldn't help but remember holding positions like this in Las Vegas. Among brothers of the Adamant Way and allied parts of the Dragon. And Ermon. Apostates.

    Still. He was here. Perhaps today, he would be a brother to them in blood. Her heart pounded in anticipation as they approached the house. Any moment now, it could begin.

    With a sidelong look to Avis and then to each of the rest, she only prayed that the might of the Adamantine Arrow would be enough and that they should emerge from this victorious. She did her best to keep her mind clear so as not to clutter up the mental channel between them, but occasionally, the calming images she was using to center herself filtered through just a little.

    Battle was won by the ones who kept their heads.

    Animus sets a brutal pace, drawn onward by that scent, so familiar and comforting. His beloved, almost within reach. Even knowing what he would find of her, and what lay in weight, it was a powerful draw.

    But not powerful enough to draw him in unprepared. Before reaching the edge of the woods, he halts, giving himself and the others a moment to prepare. A moment's focus brings the Wild part of his soul to the surface, changing hands once again to the wolf's paws. When all seems in order, he continues cautiously forward, led onward by equal parts hope and dread.

    Leo kept the Shaman's pace as best he could, not bothering as much with his surroundings as before. Last time he got distracted with that Animus ran off, turned into a wolf, somehow forgot his friends, and tried to maul Leo. Bad times. Definitely not on the desirable repeat list.

    When Animus stopped Leo did too, nervously. 'We stopping for a rea-oh.' He saw the claws, and they looked about as fun as the maw that went with them did. Fortunately he wasn't going to experience that today, hopefully.

    At the stop Leo checked his weapons. Glock under his right armpit, machete and Rapier at the belt, and a happy Leo ready to do his job.

    Vulgar: Color drains from the immediate area and depth perception becomes temporarily skewed, everything seeming to draw in uncomfortably close, making rooms smaller and all but distant objects seem in reach.
    Vice: Color drains from Avis and her facial features seem indistinct and grainy, as though her identity is growing less defined.
    Virtue: Colors appear more vibrant and everything seems to become grander in scale.

    Avis prowled onward with Animus' quasi-wolf pack, a grimace on her face. Her heat was beating a steady pace inside her chest, her veins surging with warmth, but her fingers still itched for something else's blood to cover them. A swell of anger had also risen against Ariadne again, but it was almost unnoticed amongst the ocean already surging inside her. If the Epopt hadn't scryed alone, Avis would have two faces to direct her rage towards. It didn't matter that the Epopt had good reasons for taking on the action alone. Right now, Avis didn't have those faces, so as the alligators thrashed aimlessly in the depths of her mind, boiling water was sent spilling everywhere. Spilling towards Animus, for rushing onward so quickly. Spilling towards Ermon, for his lack of emotional investment. Spilling towards Leo, for not having equipment to spare. Spilling towards Asp for that stupid fucking look she'd just shot towards her.

    Her fellow Magi didn't deserve the anger, not at all, but that didn't change the fact that is was there. She hoped that soon, something would appear that she could set the alligators upon.

    A quick change to grey sweats and a dark hoody lets Ariadne move forward with the Arrows easily. Always good to have extra clothes laying around. The lead coin emblazoned with a leering demon and a pentacle moves back and forth as Ariadne plays with it in one hand. A gift from the man who had found her in that courtroom and had taught her the way of the Guardians. Focusing on the feel of the coin in her hand Ariadne keeps an eye out as the group moves forward. Then those claws.

    Nope..sorry, lost focus.

    He can't hope to avoid bloodbaths forever or at least that's what Ermon tries to calm himself with. Why is he here? For the lost Mages he'd never seen? For the Concillium that is just getting its shit together? For balance and against the Abyss. The left hand reflexively grips his Magical Tool - a worn coin that the Warlock always carries with himself.

    For Ariadne.

    An unsettling thought. Something to work through later if there is later. For now, he stays near the Epopt.

    Wolfimus leads cautiously through the grasses and fallow vineyard marshes. An eerie silence presides. The quarter-mile erases by degrees, However, as it does the mana in their patterns scream, twist, and shout in their souls. The environment has been warped to suit the perverse desires of the man and woman who live in the house just ahead.

    The soil beneath them is black and grasps at the feet and paws of the group as they move, causing them to sink into the earth inch by perilous inch.

    It quickly becomes apparent to the Magi that calling on Mana is a gamble. The corrupted dragon line is just beneath their feet and it's black-mana may seep deeply into their souls.

    Will they take the risk?

    Will the mana betray them?

    A light in the house flares to life.

    They are expected and the tenseness of the situation kicks into high-gear.

    Environmental Effect: Each time you call on a spell that requires a Mana Spend, take a cumulative -1 penalty as the Mana feels ripped from your pattern as though you've scourged yourself. Everyone is now within 200-300 yards of the House. Just outside of Sensory.

    The dropping, sinking feeling of the corruption in this place that twisted her Mana in her very Pattern brought a frown to Asp's serious face. The lights, too, made this even more nerve-wracking. They couldn't rely on constant Countermagic or healing, and they had to cross two hundred or more yards of dangerous territory. The kind of territory that one could be free-fired upon in. All six of them could die if their answer to the distance was a sprint.

    She scanned out into the night, looking for objects that could serve as cover or other terrain that might be advantageous to them.

    Some part of her wondered if the best play here was to destroy the house. But there was a child involved, or so it sounded. What an awkward scenario.

    "Quite the distance in," Asp thought over the Network. "What's the plan?"

    Lovely Ariadne pulses into the thought network as a light comes to life from the groups approach. The wrongness of the place bothers her to her core. Once this is over, burn this place to the ground. Salt it. Then find a way to fix the damage that's been done. Mana in the pattern around her only concerns her slightly. It will make healing harder, hopefully that occurs far away from the house.

    Shifting Ariadne looks to the sides of the house and behind them. If they are expected, being attacked from the rear would suck.
