Ring... ring...
As soon as someone picks up, Chris starts with:
'Hello, Chris Wooding speaking. Is this the manager? Velma Star asked me to call...' surely saying her name will do some miracles, '... and I had a few questions.'
There's a long pause, and a clinking sound of ice against a glass.
"Well! Then by all means let me first deeply and humbly apologize for whatever terrible quality I possess or offense I have given that you would not call me of your own volition, Mr. Wooding."
The words have a slight accent to them that disappears as she pronounces the word that the Americans have taken from her native tongue.
"And, yes, this is the manager, Cozette. What questions may you, or Madame Star, have? Would you like a room together?"
'Oh Miss Muriel, I would suggest you rather see this as a compliment than to take any offense. A young and insecure man like myself clearly needs to be pushed by a female friend to call a woman like you...' Chris had not expected Cozette to be so informal, but he improvises along the way in an amused tone, hoping for the best. Since he has only heard her name a few times, seen her at Court, that's all he knows about Cozette.
Then amusement becomes playfulness: 'Which should lead to the conclusion that Velma and I don't need a room together. But, what can you tell me about a woman called Chantey Jones? Her name has shown up here and there, and we'd love to find a way to contact her.'
"Then I applaud your choice! I'm sure if anyone could set a man straight, it would be Madame Star."
Was she being funny? Of course not. That sounded entirely different in her head, in French.
"Un moment..." she adds. "Yes. Chantay."
Her tone had changed subtly, to the precise business of dispensing information.
OOC
"I have not seen Chantay Jones in some time, but I do have a phone number for her. She was a favorite guest of Lady Crimson."
There was a slight pause.
"You might have known Lady Crimson as Madame Stamford."
Bingo.
'Ah, Madame Stamford, yes I remember her.' He just never knew her as Lady Crimson. Sounds... interesting.
Chris sounds thankful, 'A phone number would be great, Miss Muriel.'
"Her number is [num-bers]," Cozette offered, speaking slowly.
She fell silent, waiting to see if there were any more questions.
'That is incredibly helpful, thank you.' Chris pauses, that's all, right?
Yeah. 'I think that would be all for now.'
If she doesn't have anything special to add, he'll say: 'Good evening, Miss Muriel.'
Cozette returns the pleasantries and the call is concluded.
