A Star(t)ling development

If Henry were still bothered by insignificant things like his personal tastes, he wouldn't wear anything even remotely like today's outfit. But being Starling demanded it. And like the other demands of the job, he suffered it gladly. Light blue pants, a short-sleeved white shirt, with a yellow scarf visible around the collar, the whole of it ironed and arranged neatly. Completing the outfit was a shoulder bag that contained what he thought he would need : a few lockpicks, a basic electronics kit just in case, his dedicated tools, a flashlight, and so on. The Awakened B&E kit 101. With a change of clothes above it all to hide the more suspect contents from casual inspection.

After a brief stop in a restaurant bathroom, to refresh the spell keeping Starling's features on his face, Henry heads confidently to Starling's building. He knows the doorman, knows how Starling treats him. The original Starling wasn't available for a full copying of his psyche, but taking only the pieces from the doorman's memories should be enough for today.

Satisfied that he had what he needed, and that he could improvise the rest, Henry heads straight for the door, like he belongs in that building. Hell, I do belong in there.

The doorman looks up, and smiles: it's a bit forced. He's more than a bit of a homophobe, and Starling's never made an attempt to downplay his nature. "Well, good day, Mr. Starling, have you been away on business?"

Not that he gave a shit where he'd gone --probably on some wine tasting trip with one of his boyfriends-- but letting the tenants know he paid attention was good for job security.

"Thanks Johnny," Henry replies. The man's name was John, but by golly if Starling couldn't use the man's given name, no way was Henry going to. "Nothing that boring, thank goodness. A little unplanned vacation, actually," Henry replies, trying his best to affect Starling's mannerims. "The islands are absolutely enchanting this time of year."

"Anything interesting happen while I was gone?", he asks with an almost mischievioius tone. The normal Starling would likely have meant the man's love life, or his family life. Henry didn't particularly care about the answer; This was just empty conversation. Not that the doorman ever responded particularly well to those questions from the original.

"Mmmm, not really, Mr. Starling. There was a mixed martial arts tournament in town, and Donnie Briggs got his ass-- .... errr, got in a fight at O'Malley's," the man replied. "And, oh, the Chargers lost."

Apparently the man thinks that if he talks about manly things, it will protect him from Starling's cooties.

And lucky for him, this particular Starling doesn't want to give him any.

Henry keeps moving towards the door at a normal pace. He tries to make it clear through body language that he isn't going to stop and chat. Not easy when using someone else's body language. "So, nothing interesting then," he replies matter-of-factly. Immediately he adds, "I'm kidding! I'll have to catch up on all of that!", with the kind of extravagant hand gestures that someone would use when talking to good buddy. Except more exaggerated.

...and Henry is away without further effort. He comes to the two elevators that lead to the resident floors In short order, he finds himself standing in front of Starling's apartment without any further encounters.

Henry takes a good look at the door. Now begins the harder part. It'd been a while since he went into another Mage's Sanctum. An even longer while since he went in uninvited.

Maybe the time he's been gone will have softened the defenses on this place a little, Henry thinks. Yeah, right.

Knowing he's going to need to need every bit of help in there, Henry opens a tenuous connection to the crossroads between the Supernal Realms, to see what each of them might have to offer in this place.

Thoughts are an illusion. Oh shut up.

With that done, Henry takes a careful look at the door, looking for magical trouble more than the mundane kind. The mundane things were, after all, largely taken care of. He doubts there are actually any defenses here, on the outside, but he didn't get this far by taking chances.
