Edward dialled, then leaned back into his chair as the phone began to ring...
"Hello, this is Quinn." Edward heard Quinn's cultured voice come over the phone.
"Good evening, Ms. Durant. This is Edward Heinrich speaking; I hope I have not caught you at an inopportune moment?" Edward's tone was all polite concern.
Quinn shook her head a moment and leaked the smile she was wearing into her voice. Amusement and playfullness clear in the rich timber of her voice.
"If it were a delicate time, I guarantee you we wouldn't be speaking, Mr. Heinrich. " Oh that was a rimshot. She paused for a heartbeat or two. When she spoke her tone was a bit softer, more melodic. "You have my full attention now though, I promise you. To what do I owe this pleasure?"
Edward was taken aback, "Indeed," but not offended.
"When last we spoke, in response to my entreaty, you expressed some interest in a game of Core Wars. I call to inquire if your schedule permits the diversion in the near future. Should you retain interest, that is."
Quinn smiled again, and the Shadow was gladdened for the request. You know, helps to break up those nights of death, mayhem, and Masquerade breaches.
"That would be so great. With the longer nights, I certainly have the time, and I could use some levity. Sounds like you could too. It's so sweet of you to follow up. Count me in, of course! When do we start?"
'Sounds like you could too.' the knife, placed in Edward last November, twisted. Either he wasn't hiding it as well as he thought he was, or Quinn was very perceptive. Both?
He let his muscles relax with a conscious effort, let his face go slack, and put all his mental energy into a light laugh, "you are too kind, Ms. Durant. It is as you say, these nights, we all would be well served by a pleasant distraction or two."
Edward was confident he avoided feeling leaking in. He needed to collect himself properly before the formal court.
"Does [date] at the Punch Bowl Social suit your schedule, Ms. Durant?"
"Yes that works perfectly well for me. I really appreciate you taking the time to set this up and invite me Mr. Heinrich. I look forward to seeing you again."
Quinn had been in the domain long enough to realize his lack of importance. Why was she acting so positively? A personal reason?
"Likewise, Ms. Durant. Good evening." Edward waited only for Quinn to utter some parting phrase before hanging up.
"Good Evening, Mr. Heinrich." After they said goodbye, Quinn smiled ever so slightly to herself.
