Avis' grey glyph blossoms holds the cracked aperture and slides forward into the elsewhere she disappears to.
Strix notices assorted footwear with the uniforms. One set stands out from the rest; work boots, covered in white-ish gravel and powder.

Sooo....there was no bad guy coming? Just spiders?
Well, that was anti-climatic. But then Avis does something and goes into the wall. This can't be good, going into random holes in walls never leads to anything good.
"Uh....guys?" her eyes never leaving the wall and where Avis went in. Were they following?
"Is that when stuff started to get weird at home. When Cartwright died?" the rest of Avis' explanation gets a Unicorn styled nod. Makes just as much sense as anything dealing with the Abyss did.

Discern Composition; 1 success
Strix looked away from his findings and at his cabalmate at her question.
"We should follow them," he said, getting up from where he was crouching near the shoes. "It wouldn't do for us to get separated, especially since we don't know where the portal is going to."
With that said, he headed for the portal to step through it as well and follow the other mages to wherever the portal was leading them to.
OOC
Strix discovers the sand and powder is primarily calcium, silicon, aluminium and iron. He's a handy guy, and looking closer while knowing what it is, realizes it's the base material for concrete or cement.
