(Heroes) Doctor and Nurse

They passed into the foyer. It was a wide open space, airy, littered with plants in tubs. A large staircase led to an upper level; there was a well manned reception desk; further away was a rank of lifts leading to the public wards. Evidently it was during visiting hours and a steady stream of people flowed from one place to another. A voice garbled in a speaker system, slicing through the ever present thrum of pleasant music.

Assuming the pair enquire about Sophie Miller's whereabouts, they will be served by a stocky woman whose intimidating appearance is mollified by her friendly, open, face, and hipster glasses.

"Oh, I just read the Cliff's Notes."

Maybe. Maybe just the back cover of the Cliff's Notes. Or maybe the whole thing. Sure. Interesting. Word of the week.

"Okay. Kerrigan. Ummmm. Carlton. Carlton Kerrigan. With a Cee and then a Kay." Details are important. It's where the devil is at. Thin shoulders shifted, the mop rolled. Bring the shoulders in. Lose half a step. Assistants are seen, not heard.

"At your service, Mizzz Cor-day." A hand swept out.

Eventually, the same hand held the door open. Or, at least grabbed at it. Automatic doors. Who knew? Probably everyone. It's a hospital. Wheelchairs, yo. Assistants are seen, but not heard, until there's another assistant to talk to. Her people talk to their people.

"Ahem. Excuse me?" Lean forward. Just a little. Express interest, but don't Invade Space. This isn't a video game. "Could you help me? Ms. Corday is looking for someone."

It's all about the delivery. Like everyone should know.

"Pleeeeaaaase." Begging with the eyes is an art. Establish rapport. One little cog to another.

Because everyone knows how crazy Ms. Corday can be.

[Coco]

About six fee away from the two cogs, "Ms. Corday" stood, leaning on her cane, her opposite foot tapping impatiently as unimpressed eyes scanned the room. Were bureaucrats bored by other bureaucrats bureaucracy?

Perhaps.

But bureaucrats were definitely unhappy when another bureaucracy got in the way of their bureuacracy, and no one wanted to deal with a pissed off bureaucrat...unless they got off on that sort of thing. This particular receptionist, however, didn't seem to be that type of person.

Coco'll play secondary actor to Stars...whatever roll :P

The combination of googley eyes aloof professional coldness wins the day. Evidently satisfied by what she sees, the stocky receptionist checks her computer screen, makes a phone call, and then happily confirms for them the ward in which Sophie Miller rests.

"If you go now, you might still be in time. I think she was getting ready to check out," the hipster glasses wink at them, reflecting the light. "You have a good day now."

[Coco]

"Thank you," Coco pronounced as she breezed by the reception desk, cane tapping along as she marched toward the errant Sophie Millers room. Her "assistant", of course, was just expected to follow along.

Two parts Relief, three parts Gratitude. Shaken, not stirred.

Long fingers trilled out a wave to go with the Smile Cocktail, and then feet bustled after Everyone Know Mizzz Cor-Day. It's tough to follow someone and try to clear a path in front of them. It's the polite version of an Indian Run. Make circles. Clear, fall back, clear, fall back.

Watch the signs. Suggest, don't lead, toward the proper ward.

They are directed to a ward abuzz with quiet bustle. Friends and family clump around inpatients and the staff manoeuver around them distributing drinks. Everything appears as it should. White and blue walls create a sense of calm; well placed windows let in a good amount of light, looking out over Sutter's Fort set in its parkland.

Trouble is, they have to find Sophie Miller amidst the hubbub.
