Keeping up with the times is both an invaluable tool and an uphill struggle for those who walk the night. For some, such as one who woke from a long Torpor into a modern world, 'keeping up' sometimes involves looking backwards. For just such a reason, Gerald "Twice-Dead" Baker finds himself in the nonfiction section of a quiet public library. Libraries are known for being quiet, true, but this one is particularly quiet. Only a handful of patrons browsing the books or sitting at computers to do some after hours research on the public's dime. Just as well. Tonight is not a night for rubbing elbows.

The Sea King has never truly been the bookish type. He rarely reads just for enjoyment's sake, at any rate. Usually it's just articles for him. Anything to keep in touch with current events. Other times, he needs to brush up on recent history or read one of those self help books with a spine that reads 'For Dummies'. Pale and dressed dapper, he looks quite the eccentric type. Like some shut-in millionaire who only ventures outside of his mansion after dark. Fortunately, no one has yet felt the need to bother him. Which is a good thing, since he not only looks strange but also hasn't eaten in far too long. The Barrens are not only remote, but also not exactly fine pickings. He's lucky to come across a loner out there often enough to avoid falling into Torpor.

His hand finds a dusty volume on an apparent former President - an autobiography with some charismatic looking fellow from a place in Arkansas called Hope. Hope. Interesting. The old Lord rests with his shoulder just touching the end of the bookcase and starts to read.

A nagging feeling that he should avoid public places - even quiet ones - creeps up on him as he reads. Last thing I need is for someone to get a paper-cut. He closes the book, lingering on the cover for a moment. Then, at last, he shakes his head and puts the book back on the shelf.

    "Another time, perhaps."

Gerald makes his way out of the library into the night.

    Dead thread. Moving on.
