Hildegarde stood, stock still, with her back to the wood pile. Beyond, in the damp gloaming, was an enemy. And the petrol was still being poured, no doubt. Standing there, she became acutely aware of how her heart did not beat for the first time; she imagined that it did; indeed, that it was pounding in her chest. Yet she felt nothing...
