Step On A Crack

The sounds of the trail asserted itself as your eyes search out for the danger. You can barely hear the skittering of small creatures in the trees that you left behind. The trees look nearly thirty feet away now and spindly. You likely could not climb them for safety. Yet was the thought of running on your mind?

Tal has given orders that ring out on the trail.
"She has my weapon." Jose protests to Tal.
Chrissy wordlessly extends her hand to the man with a her look to Tal that was pointed. Jose hefted the weapon from Chrissy's hand and extended it behind Tal's back, watching with nervous, darting glances. Chrissy draws the knife from the sheath and questions.

"Its still that rock, is it?" She questions firmly.

Those at the camera note nothing but a large, motionless rock. It wasn't moving and gave no indication it was anything but a boulder. Had the Thing moved? How many boulders had there been on the trail when you first arrived?

"Here!" Jose screams from behind Tal. A strange humanoid creature was growing out of the ground. It resembled the golems you have read about, but you don't think golems were supposed to have sharp, bloodstained teeth. You hear Jose cry
out in pain, a strangled scream of fear and pain. Jose was on the ground with one foot buried up to the ankle in dirt. The dirt was moving. This golem thing gnashed its bloody teeth a foot from Jose's trapped ankle.

Rory sure hoped those bloody teeth were going to get broken somehow. He didn't have the means. His brain was still playing catch-up: what was that thing? Without much time to consider options, he did the first thing that came to mind -- leaping at the golem and trying to restrain it from reaching Jose.

Rory has the beast contained!

Rory can feel his hands scrape over the warm, smooth skin of the creature. The skin feels exactly as a rock would. Those two eyes focus in on Rory, eyes the color of deep shade. As Rory struggles to contain the beast, those eyes change colors as he watches, melding into a tawny sand color. They now blend in perfectly with the skin tone of the beast. The open mouth expels foul air onto Rory, the smell of death and decay. It brings up the thought of rotten meat and swarming maggots. Any close examination of the beast's teeth reveal a strip of raw meat being worked loose. The beast swallows, hiding the bloody teeth. The mouth now blends in perfectly to the beast's head, difficult to pick out.

The Beast growls. It has a perplexed nature to it, a dog uncertain.

As the Beast does this, Rory feels the muscles in the beast's arm shift under his hands. The Beast brings its powerful arms apart, pulling free of Rory's grapple.

The golem brings one Goliath arm back, swinging a palm into Jose's chest.Jose makes an explosive exhalation as the air is forced out of his lungs. His body slumps down to the dirt, his leg held at an unnatural angle to the ground, almost as though something is applying pressure to it. Checking the ankle, you see that it lies over one of the sandy cracks in the path. Jose lays there for a moment. Jose makes a desparate gasp for air and begins to kick at his leg at the odd angle with his other leg. His gun begins to draw a solid bead towards his own ankle.

At the cry of pain and panic, Tal spun, witnessing Rory diving onto the monster as it struck Jose down. Panic flared in her chest. Brutal, gory death loomed over the two people she felt most responsible for and the vision of the thing's bloodied teeth seemed to sear itself into her brain. Her jaw clenched, her grip on the knife tightened and she sprang towards it without a word, determined to shove steel down the things throat. She danced over Jose to reach the Golem, her arm lashing out, the knife point hitting where the creature's mouth had been.
