Ryan Marcus felt a burning bit of curiosity. He wanted to know what he could find out about this '
Doctorow
' who had mysteriously found him and sent him the phone. Something inside him suggested that he couldn't trust anything the man said until he could verify any of it himself. So he went looking.
And he was careful. Advanced degrees in computer science and twenty-five years experience as a programmer and hacker with state of the art equipment did not tend to leave one working sloppily. He had seperated his expensive laptop from the network, heading to a coffee shop to do his searches through the Wifi, bouncing the signal from false IP to false IP to false IP all around the world and setting up trace defences.
Paranoid? Sure.
But of all the Vigil-related people he'd met, he felt like there was at least a tiny bit of trust he could place in each based on who they were and what they did (except for that dickhead who Mike and Harlowe had ripped apart). A cop. An athlete. Et cetera. But God only knew what the unknown man behind the modulator was capable of. So Ryan did what he had to do to keep himself safe and gather information while he had the chance to.
Ryan isn't able to find a lot beyond the writer with the Same Name. Doctorow the hacker exists, but he is meticulously careful about disguising himself and his existence to the outside world. As best as Ryan can find, Doctorow showed up on the scene about 8 years ago but nothing can be directly attributed to him. He never leaves calling cards or graffiti or anything claiming responsibility. Anything he has done is hearsay and rumor. As best as Ryan Can tell, Doctorow isn't in it for the glory. He does not have a blog or a website or anything like that. He doesn't even have something as "mundane" a facebook page.
The old-timey hacker stroked his stubble thoughtfully as he took it all in. He wasn't about to draw conclusions. He couldn't.
But for the moment, what Ryan could guess was that he was not a fucking idiot gloryhound. And in some ways, that was comforting, especially if he was offering help.
His searches done, he disconnected and turned off his PC, heading for the hospital. He had a lot to think about, but first, he had to surgery to do.
