The Spiral VIII

The Spiral's a bar that pretty much everyone's heard of, and no one knows anything about. There's too many stories for it to be real; one guy says there's a European Human Trafficking ring running out of there one week, next week it's a group of people running flesh for NAMBLA, next it's illegal firearms, and the week after that, maybe the Hook-Handed Killer showed up and showed 'em all a thing or two. The truth's a lot more mundane and a lot less interesting.

It's a bar, with wooden panelled walls and a scarred old guy, who looks like every other scarred bartender with a shotgun under the counter. The people who come here tend to be the people who want to get drunk. The booze swings between okay and paint-thinner, but at least it helps you sleep at night after a couple of shots.

Hunters know it as a meeting point between cells, a place where you can slip down to the basement if the bartender knows you, and trade a bit of info or get a little no-questions-asked surgery.

Mortals know it as a Goddamned dive where you can get a quiet drink without anyone really paying attention to it. Either way, it's a good enough place to meet new people.

    How this works

This evening, the bar already has a few people inside at opening. They're a relatively sombre company, mostly dressed in darker colours. It would be easy to think a wake was taking place, were it not for the late hour. On the edge of the counter are a few newspapers - The Sacramento Bee, backdated from the last few days. The paper on top is from Saturday, just the day before, with the front page announcement that tonight is when a candlelit vigil will take place.

It looked like The Spiral, of all places, was the meet up spot for the group to head down to Freemont Park in a few hours time.

Even the old man looks less gruff than usual, as he stood against the bar cleaning shiny glasses.

Derevko strode in, his gaze sliding towards the mourners. For a moment, his expression showed a fractional flicker of something that might have been softness instead of scars and blunt force. Then it was gone, and he strode towards the bar, slinging himself down on one of the broken stools.

"The usual," he growled, glancing back. "I see the atmosphere in here finally got so fucking grim a funeral broke out."

Dr. Marcus entered the bar. He had started coming out here more often, having actually enjoyed himself and been able to let a bit loose without getting judged too much by everyone. Tonight, he wore blue jeans and a white t-shirt, but he didn't look like he'd just come from work. Giving a smile and a nod to the Old Man, Ryan made his way up to the bar. "Good to see you Agent Derevko... how are you tonight?" The doctor smiled. He'd had a day off and had gone for a flight. Always fun. His mood, unlike the bar's, was fairly upbeat.

His eye flicked over to the paper and he idly picked it up, scanning it. Weird. Why are they meeting here...? His eyes looked down at the paper and then back up at the Old Man.

The Old Man snorted derisively. "Not quite." He poured the DHS: Geo Agent a drink and slid it across to the younger, scarred man.

He gave a curt nod to the lesser know doctor. "Vigil. For the missing."

April walked through the front door of the Spiral with a confident stride. It had been a few months since she had been to the bar, since that first time when she met Lynx and Derevko for the first time. The truth is, the Spiral wasn't really the kind of bar she was used to frequenting, but she figured that the place deserved another shot. Hopefully this time the Old Man wouldn't be pulling a shotgun on anyone, but one could never know with this place. After all, the rumors of what went down within its walls were rather...unique to say the least.

This time around she knew better than to wear a dress to a place like this, but she was probably still overdressed for this particular bar. Either way, April liked being stylish, no matter where she went. Noticing the scarred agent already sitting by the bar, she headed in his direction and sat on the stool next to him, carefully placing her purse on the bar in front of her.

"Agent Derevko, how are you this evening?" she said to him with a friendly smile. She took notice of the peculiar group of people around the establishment. "Looks like its a busy night."

"Doc... April," Derevko drawled, his gaze flicking quickly over the college student. He paused, shaking a cigarette free of the packet and putting it to his lips to light. "You are going to get yourself mugged one of these days, girl."He said gruffly. "Don't advertise what you've got to people in places like this. It makes 'em think you can afford to lose it."

That was probably about as close as Derevko ever got to being nice.

Daysha walked into the upstairs part of the Spiral for a change. She was dressed as per usual, black dress slacks, navy blue shirt and her leather jacket full of unnoticeable pockets. She saw Agent J Derevko as she walked in. Well that's no fucking surprise. She gave him a jerked head nod. She was in a decent mood, which generally meant no one pissed her off yet today.

Walking up to the bar, when the Old Man was free she asked politely. "When you have a chance, could I get a vodka sour, please?" She turned around and pulled out her smokes and leaned her back on the bartop. Her yo-yo quitting smoking plan obviously failed. Oh fucking well. The Detective thought she recalled a short gal April Davenport a while back. Though it showed how much she dodged the upstairs most of the time. Gotta love back door keys. She caught another new face Dr. Ryan Marcus , again she wondered how the fuck people ended up in this joint.

Derevko gave Daysha a short nod in response, just to acknowledge that she was present. Disappointingly, not in the stripper outfit. Shame it wasn't another costume night, really. He'd quite happily have showed up in that damn barbarian outfit if it meant he could snicker at Jackson and Harlowe in their costumes.

He only thought that out of some sort of obligation, because he wasn't really feeling annoyed at anything particular right now. He leant on the bar.

"Evening, Jackson. Haven't seen you around in a while."

The doctor turned his head, noticing a rather attractive and probably much younger woman entering the bar. He turned his head, since he was next to Agent Derevko, and gave her his polite, if not remarkably sexy, smile. It was nights like tonight when he really felt his age, when he wondered if the hotties making their way through the bar were just another Laila, another vampire set to feed on him and take from him. Another woman he'd have to shoot in the head until she turned to ash --

Snapping out of it, Ryan simply was attentive to the conversation beginning around him, nodding a greeting to the new face (@Daysha Jackson ). It never hurt to be polite. He doubted Derevko would introduce him, but who knows? Maybe the prickly Agent felt gentlemanly this evening.

    He doubted it.

"Hello Derevko." Daysha took a drag of her smoke. "Yeah, I've been busy as of late." Mainly dealing with the stupid downstairs...

She caught the new guy looking at her and she spoke in her usual dry monotone voice. "Hey. New here?"

God please don't be another fucking tool. I am so sick of dickbags lately I may just shoot when a load of stupid comes out of their mouths.
