Rafe was sitting at one of his work benches at home, working on a new design for body armor that was soft but would harden on impact. It was all velocity versus atom density, and the math was making his head hurt. Working on this design had brought up the memory of Specialist Chris McCabe, and it was grinding on his consciousness again. He opened one of his anonymous mail accounts, the one he always used when he was about to do something he really shouldn't. He had friends in the medical field, and from time to time info would leak out of there he could use. Since his encounter he hadn't been back though, and he'd become a lot more careful of how he made contact. He typed in the recipient, a friend he knew might have the info he was looking for, and started typing.They'd met online at one of the forums he frequented, and had tossed down a few beers and talked about the wonders of science. But he'd never asked for anything like this.

I need to ask you a favor. There was a solider found dead at a downtown mall on the date below, and I'm looking into it for a friend. I'd like to know if you can forward me some information on it, or perhaps direct me to who did the autopsy. I know its not strictly your field anymore, since you did your internship at the morgue already, but I'd really appreciate any information you could give me on how he died and if the attending suspects foul play and perhaps if you've seen or heard anything like it before. If you could swing that for me, id owe you one. Hell, you might even persuade me to go with you to one of those clubs you like so much.

He didn't really know what to expect, but it was worth a try. While he waited for a reply he began looking for the strange symbol again. The search was still in the cache of his laptop browser so finding it again wasn't hard, but finding out what the symbol meant and if it had been used in other places was much harder. He fed the search string into a copy of a search script he used for compiling news about his fathers company products, and made some changes to the structure so it would be more sensitive to keywords and saved all the URL's it found the image on so it could locate them again faster the next time. It was a bit of a job and it took the better part of 4 hours to complete the new version of the script, but time didn't seem to matter when he coded. He fed the script a list of words, including Murder, Death, Suspect, Kill and so forth and set it to grind using one of his servers and a remote list of proxies to keep the search relatively hidden. The script would go through all the pictures found using the search string that described the mark, and find pages containing these words, ranking them relative to how many times and how many of the words appeared.

He felt pretty tired, but very satisfied after all that work. It was early evening when he finished, and he went downstairs for some food while the computer worked. Colt was already sitting in the kitchen by his bowl, waiting expectantly. He tousled the dogs ears, and found the healthy pet diet food he'd bought that week. He threw in a few chunks of the roast he'd made last night, and put the food down for his pet. "Eat up now. Its good for you..". While the dog ate he made himself a sandwich of the leftover meat, and grabbed a bottle of water. As he returned to his computer, he checked news as he ate.
