The Spiral's a bar that pretty much everyone's heard of, and no one knows anything about. There's too many stories for it to be real; one guy says there's a European Human Trafficking ring running out of there one week, next week it's a group of people running flesh for NAMBLA, next it's illegal firearms, and the week after that, maybe the Hook-Handed Killer showed up and showed 'em all a thing or two. The truth's a lot more mundane and a lot less interesting.

It's a bar, with wooden panelled walls and a scarred old guy, who looks like every other scarred bartender with a shotgun under the counter. The people who come here tend to be the people who want to get drunk. The booze swings between okay and paint-thinner, but at least it helps you sleep at night after a couple of shots.

Hunters know it as a meeting point between cells, a place where you can slip down to the basement if the bartender knows you, and trade a bit of info or get a little no-questions-asked surgery.

Mortals know it as a goddamned dive where you can get a quiet drink without anyone really paying attention to it. Either way, it's a good enough place to meet new people.

    How this works

A blonde woman enters the Spiral and takes a stool at the bar. She wears a simple grey T - shirt and jeans; a tan purse is across her shoulder. Nicole gives the room a once - over; before looking for the cantankerous old man.

Walking into the bar by himself was Gregory, his gaze buried in a book like usual. He had actually managed to find a newer edition book on occult theory that he was able to check out instead of simply removing it from the library archives. It was absolutely fascinating too, full of side-by-side theories explaining various worldly (and other-worldly) things.

Anemia and porphyria... Sudden cases of unexplained blood loss. Oh and speaking of a drink... Gregory closed his book and walked up to the bar where a blond girl was sitting. Laying the shut book on the bar in front of him, Greg hopped up onto the stool a couple places down from her, briefly worrying as he felt it wobble and creak. When it set, he sighed with mild relief.

"Whew. Close one." he remarked to Nicole with a laugh.

April walks into the bar wearing a simple black dress, and carrying a black purse with her. She looks around the place and then takes a seat by the bar.

Not the coziest of places...but it will do for now.

She had arrived in Sacramento only about a month ago, and school had been keeping her rather busy since her arrival. However, tonight she had the night off and she was not going to waste it away by staying in her apartment watching reruns of "Friends."

April heard about the Spiral from some of the other students at Sacramento State. She had expected a bit more than a quiet bar, but she figured she may as well give the place a chance. After all, she was only looking to change her routine up a bit and find a nice spot to get a drink.

When the bartender walks up to her to take her order, she offers him a brief smile.

    "I'll have a Vodka Tonic."

Lynx pushed open the door after the young lady in black. Hell if it's good enough for her it's good enough for me, he thought with a smile eyeing her up and down in a less than gentlemanly manner. He had heard about this place from a buddy of his in the precinct, back when he was part of the precinct, back when he was a legitimate detective. Now he was just Agent Jaeger, some guy from a less than reputable government organization who can't even keep track of his ID tag. He surveys the scene, sure that the chances of him knowing anyone there were slim to none, not that he intended for this to be a social call. Just some medicine for the nerves is all.

The man, Lynx, sits down at the bar not all that far from the young lady in black and takes out a cigarette. Setting it between his lips he toys with it in his mouth while he searches for his lighter in his long gray coat's pockets. He waits patiently for the barman to take the woman's order before placing one for himself. Vodka Tonic, highball garnished European drink for women who tried to act sophisticated.

When the barman comes over to him he says, "Hey, Mac. Mix me up a Manhattan, would you? Thanks." He locates his lighter and starts flicking it while taking side-glances over at the woman. After a moment he realizes he's not getting a flame. "Damn it all..."

Nicole turns on her stool as the man chooses a stool next to her; setting a book down on the counter top.

"Yeah." She remarks with a polite enough smile. Her eye is drawn to the book as she cranes her neck a bit to read the title. Her eyebrow finds a new region in her forehead for a moment as she remarked.

"Interesting title." She gestures towards the book with her free hand. "Haven't seen a book like that in awhile."

Like since her little sister Kristen had realized there was a reason that she hasn't chosen an academic life... after she'd dropped a pretty penny on some odd looking book. Sort of like this one that Nicole found herself looking at now.
    "You researching something?"

The Old Man gives April a dubious once over; perhaps his eyes hitching at that black dress. He pauses at his business of wiping a dirty glass with an equally dirty rag and plunks the glass in front of April. A Vodka and Tonic is created with a bit of a laziness that suggested he wasn't big on creating a 'signature drink' for you.

Lynx gets a look as well; although his scarred face registers a fleeting expression at 'Mac'. It could have been amusement or barely concealed contempt; it was any one's guess.

Lynx's drink is created with the same flair as April's and they are both quoted a fair price for the drink; in a flat tone that suggests he expected bills to be hitting the counter. He spares a glance for Lynx and his inadequate lighter; reaching around the bar to flick a well used book of matches with two lucky matches remaining.

Marion walked into the bar, dead tired. He was still wearing his suit from work, and had seemed to neglect putting his badge somewhere less visible since he had gotten off of work. He quickly looked around the place before sitting down at the bar a couple of seats away from Gregory and Nicole, resting his elbows on it and gently massaging his temples with his fingers.

Damn. Really should be just be going home to try and sleep... Don't want to be quite as out of it for the start of week two as a official government agent.

He looked up at the old man, reaching for his wallet. "Hey, how much would it cost for a guy to get a Miller High Life around here?"

He leaned a bit more forward as he waited for a response. Then again, maybe getting a little alcohol into my system will help not dream about that thing tonight...

The Old Man walks over towards Marion; grabbing a dusty bottle of beer from behind the bar as he does so. He sets it in front of Marion with a flat. "Two bucks."

April pays the Old Man, leaving a couple of extra dollars as a tip.

    "Thank you."

She brings the glass to her lips gracefully and takes a vigorous sip, trying to ignore the fact that she feels a little out of place at this bar. There were a handful of dodgy dive bars she had been to back in DC, but this fine establishment made the other places look like five star hotels in comparison.

April glances over at the man sitting nearby and can't help but snicker at his bad fortune. She reaches into her purse and procures a Zippo of elaborate design, which she slides over to the man without turning to look at him.

"I hate when that happens. Just make sure you give that back to me."

She raises her glass to her lips once again, taking another sip of Vodka.
