"It's possible that the chess piece was someone's signature, but I think that it's equally likely that it was a message. The note 'your move', or something to that effect, sounds like it was directed at someone besides the authorities. Almost as if what a challenge directed at a third party, but that's just suspicion. Obviously your right, we should check whatever databases we can, but that's my impression of the piece," Beatrix explained.

"Also, we definitely need to question the gardener and grocery boy, but we could also try contacting the bio-chemistry departments at the universities Hertz taught at or studied in. Even if his research was classified he might have contacted an old mentor, friend, or rival for advice on something related to what he was studying. That might give us some more clues as to what was going on down in that basement. Now, the reason why I brought up the research and the basement lab is that so far the only possible motive that I've noticed is connected with Hertz's work. He had no social contacts, his family is deceased, and he works as one of the Military's mercenary R and D specialists. I'm not saying that we should jump the gun but that's something to keep in mind." She pursed her lips, realizing that she sounded more like a crazed conspiracy theorist instead of a trained investigator and seasoned officer of the Law, but that was what she saw in the case.

Jakes listens to Agent fletcher's exposition, nodding every now and then, and biting his lip at the end. After a brief pause, he speaks. "I thought of a message at first too, the signature thing was an afterthought. The thing is... If it was a message, it had to be aimed at us. Either at DHS, or at least DoD; if who kidnapped dr. Hertz knew of his work, if it was the motive, then the perpetrators - I'm thinking of more than one - should have known that this investigation would be kept confidential."

"Unless they were aiming at somebody they knew had a mole on either agency, or other means of monitoring our investigation... But then, that's too much X-Files, I guess."
    Jake lets out a smirk.

"Any research he was into would be a strong reason for the felony; there are not many others. Anyhow, I have a lot of reporting to do, we, Agent Derevko and me, are probably going to report our findings to SAC Johnson later today, tomorrow morning tops, and look into the possible witnesses after that." He looks away from Beatrix for a moment. "I think reporting should be left for when we had closed the case, or at least explored all possible leads, but I guess DHS works differently... It seems finding out what that research was about and if it is compromised or not is more important than finding out Hertz." He gets up from the chair, still not looking Fletcher eye to eye. "We all should care about the nation first, right?"

"Anyway, if you've just arrived, you'd better get used to office. It's best to go through at least one day of tedious routine before being stranded in someone's basement, waiting for a hazmat team to arrive and tell you that you've got anthrax and have 20 minutes left... Well, see you, agent Fletcher."
He raises a hand to her.

"It was good to me you Agent Dullahan," Beatrix replied, returning his farewell with a nod. She settled back into the chair as it's actual owner moved out of the room, her attention fixed back on the case file in her hands...
