Blue skies and sunny weather was the order of the day, and this spring morning found Jinx flapping down from the radio tower towards the front gate of the station property. Finding Thirteen there, he alit on a nearby tree branch, for the chain link fence was not a good place to perch anymore.
The Acanthus was at the edge of the fence gate, on a ladder, busy working with pliers and wirecutters. There was a new addition to the fence now: A series of V-shaped metal braces, one set upon each fence post. Connected to these braces were no less than six lines of barbed wire, three lines to a side, masking for a very difficult, and painful, barrier to climbing. Thirteen was setting the last line of wire to the last V brace, finishing up what had been a week's worth of work. Her hands were covered by some thick work gloves, all the better to avoid cutting up her fingers on the barbs.
"Almost done?" the crow asked.
"Al...most..." the redhead responded absently, her focus on securing the wire. "There!" she stated triumphantly, followed by letting out a tired breath. "Done well before lunch, too."
"Yeah," Jinx chuckled, turning his head to follow the lines of barbed wire, "Those kids will never graffiti the station house again!"
The Libertine smirked as she climbed down the ladder, "Not the ones I'm tryin' to keep out." Though barring teenage trespassers was a bit of a bonus. The graffiti she didn't mind, but she needed privacy here. She collected her tools and the roll of excess wire, and started to tote them back towards the radio station, walking across the dirt courtyard. The familiar followed, swooping past overhead.
"Ah, right. You mean Stabby Girl?"
"Her, and the Seers, and every other threat out there," Thirteen grumbled, annoyed at the high stack of enemies she seemed to have collected since arriving in Sacramento.
"Correct me if I'm wrong," the bird began, perched on the roof of the radio station ahead.
"You're wrong," the redhead cut in with a smirk.
"Ha! Good one! Anyway, what good is a pointy fence going to do against some evil wizards? Can't they just magic their way past it?"
"It's not foolproof, no," she answered as she headed around the building and towards the back. "It's an obstacle. One of several. Sure, a Moros isn't likely to find a fence to be a problem, or all the new locks I've installed. But it will slow them down, and there's other layers of defense that a Necromancer may have more trouble with."
"How?" Jinx didn't really understand the distinctions among the Awakened Paths.
"A Moros will have an easy time with a fence. Matter magic. But what about the murder?" she nodded her head towards the radio tower, where some of the friendly crows were nesting. Others were out finding food. "They'd need Life magic to keep the wee birdies quiet, and they may not have that. Likewise, a Shaman can silence the murder without breakin' a sweat, probably, but the fence and locks may be a pain in the arse for them."
"Ohhhh! I see," Jinx came to rest at the backside of the station building, where Thirteen's motorcycle was parked under a metal awning, as a sort of car port. There was a wooden work bench against the back cement wall, where the Enchantress set down the tools and roll of barbed wire. She intended for this place to be an auto garage of sorts one day.
"Do you?" she teased.
The bird huffed, "Yes! Different kinds of security to stop different kinds of Mages! Uh, right?"
"Right! Layered defenses!"
Jinx bobbed his head proudly, "Okay, so what if Chambers and Aurora both decide to walk in here together? What do you do then?"
After putting the tools away, she turned and smiled at her familiar, "Security cameras, motion sensors, alarmed windows. Electronics to baffle those without Forces."
"We don't have any of that."
"Yet," the Acanthus said, putting the work gloves away. She then started walking towards the back door, "The fancy security systems have to wait till I got the cash. And then there's the magic defenses. Once I'm able, I'll be settin' up wards to keep spies out. The barbed wire, new locks and the crows are just phase one!" She had to take out her keys to open the back door. Aside from new locks, all the doors now had more locks than previous.
"You do love to plan this stuff," Jinx commented in amusement, flying inside once the door was opened.
"Can't leave everything to dumb luck," the Acanthus said, ironically. She started to enter the station when the crow humorously called back to her.
"You forgot the laaaaaadder!"
"Shite!" Thirteen cursed and headed back towards the gate.
