The Silver Ladder has sponsored a most anticipated performance. Members of the cultural elite in Sacramento have been invited to attend a solo musical event by the talented Fiddler.
The small room at the Bismark Hotel is seated with a number of Sleepwalkers, and several important figures from around the city. Bresus Valkyrre, cultural minister of Sacramento has painstakingly arranged the event in order to ease the strenuous atmosphere caused by the city's many problems.

Blackfire arrives in a rented limo.
First one of these things I was invited to. Must want me to get a bit more involved with the cities affairs, although how they got Fiddler to play here is beyond me. His ticket prices are insane.

Invictus picked at the rented tuxedo's collar. It wasn't that the thing didn't fit him, it had fit fairly well when Alice first gave it to him and after a snap of his fingers it fit like it was made for him by someone with his most intimate details on file. It felt dishonest somehow, like he was pretending to be someone he wasn't. He wished he could just wear a pair of jeans to this thing.
Alice tisked at him from the seat next to him she was in a very respectable black suit/dress thing, and Invictus had no idea what it was called. "Stop picking at it, it's fine. You look very respectable in a suit you know." The Acanthus winced when he grunted an affermative. "No, you aren't in Prison anymore, you haven't been there for a year. I know you can do better than 'ugg'. Everyone here that needs to know about your past knows about it, and if they don't then their opinions don't matter.".
"I... I'm just not used to a suit, I guess." The Town Car pulled up to the Bismark Hotel right then, saving him from trying to articulate why he felt so uncomfortable in the perfect suit.

Fiddler had arrived an hour before his performance. He tuned his violin, smoked a cigarette, and returned to his room, where he made the final necessary adjustments to his violin.
As he looked into the mirror and tied his bow-tie, he couldn't help but remember his previous recitals-the ones in grade school for his parents, the ones in high school for his teachers, and the ones in college for his professors. He always had an audience to impress, and he had never failed to deliver. Confidence was never an issue for him on stage.
This audience was especially important, though. he had a chance to impress his peers and superiors of the Silver Ladder, as well as other esteemed guests. There was no doubt in his mind that he would not only have to play an impressive piece, but that he would have to play it extremely well. For this reason, he selected "Partita for Violin No. 2" by Bach, which ended in the famous Ciaconna. 'Anyone with any musical training would have a hard time being unimpressed after my performance tonight' he thought.
When he finished with his tie, he smiled with smug satisfaction in the mirror, already confident that he had made all the right preparations. All he had left to do was play.
He walked on stage to the applause he was so used to hearing, and smiled at the audience. Then, he began to play.

Ruby loved performances, and the refined elegance and appreciation for the fine arts invigorated her.
If she hadn't have met Gregory, she might very well have ended up with the Ladder instead of the Mysterium.
Looking around, she spots a few faces that she recognizes. Peter Cartright is in the audience, as is Ms. Primordia (who enters late, which must be embarrassing) and Starling (wearing an off-white hint of lavender suit).
The grandiose woman sitting up close must be Bresus the woman who invited Fiddler to play. She looks very elegant if not humorously larger than her willow-thin husband.
Ruby closes her eyes, and focuses her thoughts on the tiny imperceptible imperfections of the music. She has always felt that the most beautiful part of art is the part that reminds us all that it is human.

Blackfire was enjoying his champagne, he had worked hard to get to this kind of life.
Listening to the once again fabulous performance, he really enjoyed the perks.
He looked around the room, absentmindedly taking in the people seated listening to the performance. He had had only minor dealings with some of the middle men when buying his house and making the travel arrangements.

The Champagne made his nose itch. He wasn't drinking anything, just pretending to while he stood with his mentor, speaking little and mostly observing.
With everyone seated and the music playing, Invictus felt better. Nobody was looking at him, and he could blend in with the audience. He wasn't especially cultured, so he was sure that most of the performance was lost on him, but it was still very good music.

The performance reaches a moving finale. The small room rises in politely restrained applause.
Bresus steps forward and addresses the room.
"A most exceptional performance! I believe that we should all thank Mr Fiddler for joining us this evening, and I thank all of you for coming as well. I would also be delighted to invite you all to stay afterwords for the reception, Mr Cartright has been so kind as to bring bottles of Dom Perignon from his personal cellar. There will be a delightful swordfish sushi as well, with a vegetarian option of course."
"So, let us give one more round of applause for our guest!"

Invictus takes his cue from the assembled people and stands to applaud the performance. He groaned inwardly though. Fish should be cooked, not eaten raw. He had held some hope that he might be able to get home and get some late night studying in, but that option was gone now.

Blackfire stood with the crowd and applauded with vigor. The performance was as good as he had hoped it would be.
And there will be a chance to mix with other Silver Ladders, not a bad night at all.

Fiddler bowed at the assembled crowd. He felt good about his performance and could see that those who knew how to listen had enjoyed the experience. He hoped that the others had at least been able to keep up. He waited for Bresus to finish speaking before bowing again.
Fiddler left the stage, returning to his room. After he put away his violin, he indulged himself in another cigarette. While taking drags he thought, 'Dom Perignon should be a welcome treat tonight,' and he reminded himself that he shouldn't get too carried away at the reception. After all, here was his second chance to make a good impression on the local Thearchs, and his track record was looking good so far.

Bresus swoops in to shepherd the artist through the crowd, introducing him to the great and the small. She ensures that everyone gets face time, and that no one lingers longer than their station deserves.
"Ah yes! This is Richard Verner, he does accounting work for us. And this is Ms Lowell, who is the most qualified receptionist you might every know."
After making the greater part of the sweep of the room, Fiddler has the opportunity to meet the other Thearchs of his station, a Mr Blackfire who has done very well for himself as a businessman, and a Ms Alice along with her Mentee Mr Invictus who do exellent work with the correctional system.
"Pardon me if you will Mr. Fiddler, I have something I need to attend to for a moment. We can talk about finding you a place to stay in Sacramento when I get back." Bresus excuses herself and heads over to have a conversation with Peter Cartright.

Blackfire seeing that Fiddler was open for a moment decided to sneak in and talk to him.
"A better performance then the last time I had the opportunity to listen to you in concert. Will you be frequenting Sacramento nowadays or is this a special occasion?"

Fiddler took a quick scan, and thought over for a moment who he could speak to next, at last deciding he might as well try the mages that he didn't know, or was introduced to briefly. He then began his search, exchanging pleasantries with others and casually bringing up his subject of interest.

Invictus drifted from group to group. He didn't say much (a habit that he realized that he needed to get out of), getting by with a smile and seeming to agree with whatever whomever was leading the group's views were. There comes a moment where he drifts off from one group and there isn't convenient spot open for him to move gracefully into a discussion. He makes his way over to a balcony just off the reception hall for a quick breath of fresh air.
The view of the city was certainly spectacular. Sometimes he wished that some things might have played out... differently than they did, he really did.

As he moved about, Fiddler had no trouble making small talk and discussing the various issues of the day. He was, however, having difficulty in locating another mage who needed a cabal.
In a moment of frustration, he decided he needed another cigarette, and made his way to the closest outdoor space: the balcony.
As he stepped outside, he recognized Invictus from his brief introduction earlier. He lit his cigarette before asking, "Its Invictus, isn't it?"

This was... Fiddler? That was something he was always worried about, mispronouncing the name some people picked. He put his practically untouched champagne glass down on the balcony's stone keep-from-falling thing (he really could not remember what it was called tonight), before extending his hand to the man.
"Yes, it is. You go by Fiddler, right? I'm sure you've heard this all night so far, but you are really a fantastic artist. Is that the right term? Or is it musician?"
