He hated doing this. He knew what it felt like. Being grabbed and dragged through the Thorns. But if the Oliver wasn’t going to listen to words… that left only one (terrible) option.

Gerrit considered Cassandra with a thoughtful look. So it wasn't just mirrors she was after. Plus, she seemed to have a good explanation for what had transpired here. "Seems to add up, all things considered. Do you think there are any surprises or ambushes to worry about?" Gerrit thought about how derelict the bathroom seemed - it really seemed like nobody expected them to come here but it was always better to hear a trusted second opinion on that.

With her looking into the door on the right, Gerrit was left with the one at the end of the hallway. Cassandra was right: this might be their only chance to find what was stashed here. He waited for her to open the door, ready to intervene if anything jumped the Fairest. Once she appeared to be in the clear he went to the last closed door and tried it. First priority still was finding a mirror, but after talking to Cassandra he'd also look for anything else that might be of interest.

And then... Violence!

Anatole had a healthy respect for an Ogre's physical prowess, especially one as big as Ram and so well proportioned for sheer destruction. For some reason, he had anticipated that Ram would be slower - closer to a slow moving but unstoppable jaggernaut than a whirlwind. Well, this wizened was getting schooled.

Anatole manages to catch the shocked words on his lips before he says them. He cannot stop the exhalation of air when Ram makes his move.

The burned dwarf manages to keep up with the raging Ogre: slipping his axe into both hands, Anatole quietly stalks behind the stricken porcine Ogre - hoping that Oliver is now more focussed on Ram's attack than his flanks.

Cassandra picks up the book on the nightstand and makes the quick decision to take the leatherbound book on the nightstand to investigate later. Her assumption is a diary and if it is, that could be invaluable if he's had contact at all with Ann recently or even a year plus ago. No one has seen Ann in years, so this would change things or give insight if it is what she thinks it is. She puts it in the bag and moves out to go with Gerrit to the final unsearched closed door.

"I'm not sure, but... It might be worth it." She lets out a slow breath, "You know, assuming we make it out." As soon as that comes out of her mouth, her heart begins aching, "No. We are getting out of here. I'm not dying in this filth." I have people to get home to now.

Carefully, they move inside and Cassandra begins looking around once more for tomes, tokens, or other oddities. It is like a pounding in her chest, the feeling of excitement for what she might find. Is this what power feels like? That feeling of knowing what you might have in the palm of your hands? That's terrifying. ...it is the house of an Autumn, isn't it?

Last Room

Cassandra puts away the journal, and it is a journal, on the from of the leather, is flaking gold lettering saying as much. it's closed with leather wrap around ties and a horn button.

She regroups with Gerrit as he opens the door, and they both see a lot of books, other clutter and knickknacks. Making the living room's collection to pale in comparison.

They are first met with a bookshelf. Several in fact, there is a white washed wall to their left, only to be broken up three feet in, by the first large bookcase, to their immediate right, another bookshelf, leaving a narrow opening to delve deeper into the room.

With their searching eyes, they can see mundane titles, magical ones. Scrolls, rolls, things that could be Tokens or Triffles but surely this wasn't everting. Especially with how these bookshelves have been arranged. Maybe they would even find the elusive mirror...

Gerrit somberly nodded at Cassandra's statement. "Don't worry. I'll make sure we'll make it out. Promise." And he didn't need a Pledge to mean it - they would get back home even if he had to rip apart walls and guards standing in his way.

He shuddered. Where did that come from? Maybe the Hedge was getting to him again - he might have to talk to someone about this, exchange experiences. For now he had to focus: focus on finding anything interesting without getting caught, focus on making sure he could keep his promise.

With Smoke's aid he silently went off to the right, silently mentioning for Cassandra to take the left side. His plan was to go through the narrow opening first - a mirror was still his top priority and if anything waited for them on the other side he wanted to be taking the front.

The sheer size of the library made one thing clear: this was probably important, which meant it might be guarded or protected another way. Coupled with Anatole's command to get going earlier made Gerrit focus harder on the mission than before. Only if no traps or mirrors were to be found would he have a closer look at the bookshelves, looking for anything interesting. He didn't have a concrete plan about what he was looking for in that regard, but it were probably things that would benefit the Freehold at large instead of anything for his personal gain.

As soon as they enter rhe room and Cassandra sees was she is looking at, she nearly gasps. Her heart races with dizzying excitement. THIS is a library. She briefly scans the shelves as she walks further in. Autumn library? Autumn library. Theirs? The other Freehold's? No. Doesn't matter. This is theirs now. She'll claim it for Wint- the Freehold. She feels a sense of empowerment radiating from her body.


"We need anything we can get in here that looks of upmost importance. Prepare your bag to take things once mine is full. We're going to need to take whatever we can get incase we don't have access to this later." She whispers before going to scan the shelves more in depth. She's looking for anything that is related to her job as Thane - Information about the local or further Hedge, tokens, hint of lost Winter Lore, signs of the Unbidden Lords, the Freehold history. Her mind is open, looking for patterns, themes to give her a clear idea of how the books are being organized before narrowing her searching.


If she had to choose a Primary, secondary, and tertiary focus, it would be that of the Hedge (especially if there is a better Hedge map than they have currently), the missing Winter Lore, and Tokens. In reality, all in true relation with her title.


For a moment, she can imagine what it would be like having the Lore in her hands, to finally be able to bring Winter to its full glory with the resources it should have. Missing bunkers, hidden signs yet to be seen, that fabled Onyx Mirror. Is it a real, tangible thing? Or is it just a phrase?

Smoke eases Garrit's steps, and his hurried, yet methodical journey passed the first two stacks, he quickly realizes that this isn't going to be a simple rush through. They're arranged, very particularly. Into a maze.

Through the gap between the two shelves, straight down, then a right, and Gerrit finds himself with more breathing room. He can see three choices,

Straight ahead, hard left,

Straight ahead, right,

Hard right, hard left.

On the shelves making the paths, he sees titles regarding hedge weather, a beginning guide to hedgespinning, several Macy's catalogues, a few vases, more then not are empty, obviously, nothing that important....yet.


Cassandra, distracted by the thought of finding the Library that Oliver had broken a Pledge to guard, searches through these opening shelves, an finds more mundane titles. Several cook books, and more of what she had already found within the shelves of the hutch in the living room, expanding on those topics.

Remember if you want to take anything and have it stick around for the Winter Archives, or keep the Tokens (and whatever else you might find) you'll have to pay for it!

Despite her call on the matter Gerrit didn't look twice at most of those books - he wasn't as Autumnly inclined as Cassandra and he didn't want to risk using up all of his backpack-space. But didn't she also talk about wanting to become more serious with her Hedgespinning? After a moment's hesitation he took the Beginner's Guide to Hedgespinning and continued on.

Another stop when he realized the sheer size of the library. Just how big is this place?

When faced with several equally valid looking paths he found it best to just continue moving along the right wall or bookshelf. For now there was nothing indicating a better direction and this way he would be able to trace his steps back to where he came - if the architecture of the place didn't shift and move, that is.
