Highly. Effective. Individuals.
Zodiac's spell overcame Penderson's will, making her more inclined to trust this Toby Esterhase, and the interplay between the three speaking members of the team were like the perfect storm for these cops.
Barton was a tiny bit suspicious for about the first three seconds, but shit, he did not at all want anything to do with any fucking week of being in federal custody. He was so trustworthy, too, wasn't he? They all wanted the same thing. Penderson was just a nodding fool. Between Zoey's spell and the show the Awakened were putting on, this all made perfect sense to her. The little boy? He was smiling, beaming up at Mr. Esterhase.
Apparently, he thought Feds were cool. Like on TV.
"Of course, Agent," Penderson said, almost too hastily, so overcome was she. Actually, Star might've been the most trustworthy person she'd ever met in that instant. She looked to Barton, who nodded too. It was a little less trusting, a little more grudging, but what could he do? The Feds were on the case, and he didn't want to have any unpleasant words happening to him.
Like Rendition. Or Investigative Detention. Or Waterboarding.
Nope. None of that was desired.
"Of course, sir," Barton said. "We've got your back. If this is your case, this is your case. We'll keep our mouths shut." The little boy just grinned up at The Seriously Federal Agents. "Iron Man? So cool! Yeah, it's our secret!" he squee'd.
Work Got Done. Breaches ain't shit. People wanted to believe that things were explainable. And these two hadn't seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Then, something interesting happened.
"We got a picture of the guy. Do you want it? It's not great, but it's something."
Good old Local LEOs, doing good police work.
