She starts to put together the pieces. Mandy isn't telling her everything. Autolycus is outside acting like a gibbering forgetful idiot after complaining that Mandy 'attacked' him. And now she's inside alone with a pair of people with guns who are likely going to suffer the same fate as numb nuts over here.
She sighs into the receiver.
"Damn it, Mandy. Yeah, put me on speaker so that we can all drop the high stakes poker game and the two FNGs in there can stop lying to us. There's four of us, do they really think if we were coming to hurt Tommy that wouldn't would have split up or even given them a chance by knocking on the door?"
Seriously, worst cop ever. She pauses long enough to weave the threads of fate so that she can get them to just stop being idiots.
She speaks loud enough and only sort of into the phone that everyone inside can hear through the door.
"Look, if you want Tommy to be safe you're going to open this door and let us help you. You want to keep him safe, but you're only making this worse. So why don't you invite us in for a cup of coffee and we talk about this like rational people."

Rolling her eyes to herself, she finally flipped the phone onto speaker - probably in more than enough time to allow for Nous' secondary statement to be dealt with. The look she gave Leah made it clear enough that she wasn't exactly pleased with the situation being the way it was.
Frankly she was livid. The original plan - the original one - had her going in on her own and dealing with this. Autolycus ended up being an add-on because someone thought that was a brilliant idea and she had more pressing things to deal with than arguing. So heaven forbid she actually do her job - the job they'd initially entrusted to her anyway - without all the fucking interruptions. If they wanted to drag this on into infinity, she wasn't going to be impressed. At all.
She was seething inwardly at the wasting of time and energy on this. More people would put the two officers back on the defensive, leading them to close up and be more difficult to speak with. Especially since the idiot had decided to blatantly blurt out something about their child.
How the others couldn't see that was beyond her.
Fuck this.
There were reasons she didn't like working in groups.
Nous felt her spell go off, and indeed - it went off well. The ask was too big, though. She wasn't asking for something small. She was asking Fate to manipulate the whole situation in which the police officers inside, who were paranoid and scared, gave up their perceived defensive advantage from the heavy door and chain and sat down with people they didn't trust... with their child at home and at risk.
It was a twist of fate that was simply far too great. Still. Something was going on in their favor. It just wasn't totally clear.
But Nous had said something that made both cops look very confused.
"Tommy?"
Penderson and Barton looked at each other for a moment, then back.
"Who is Tommy?"
The male cop kept his eyes squarely on the door, shotgun at the ready. Penderson stared at Mandy. Perhaps Fate had intervened in its own way to reveal something.
Those characters who saw or heard about the piece of mail that listed the Penderson child's name may roll Int+Comp to remember that their kid's name is Jacob.
Jhet and I talked in chat already, but just to be clear as to whats going on, the exact request she made was outside the scope of the Perfect Moment... but Fate does work in mysterious ways and it is helping you here.
"I... don't remember checking? I can..." He wiggles his fingers at the door to imply bibbity-bobbity-booing it "... it." Auto's face gradually shifts from confused to pissed. Okay lets be real here. Auto was working with a Guardian. Auto suddenly appears outside where said Guardian is interviewing potential witnesses with no memory of why or how. Said Guardian is also apparently not freaking out because of a hole in their memories.
Doesn't take a Master to figure out something's hinky.
"Their kid's name isn't Tommy." He shoes Nous away from the door. She can disapprove of him and talk on the phone without being in his way. He puts his reverse peephole up to the door to see what's going on inside. He was quickly getting sick of some people implying he was dead weight through their tone.

Standing in the hallway? It wasn't going to help anything. Super suspicious looking, though. And a cramped hallway was just not a good place to be when a shotgun went off. Because spray. That much? He knew.
Plus: Cops.
"Stay here?" he suggested to Autolycus .
"I"m bouncing outside. If they called for backup, we need to have a heads up, OK? Tell Nous. Keep your phones handy."
It was time to pull another card from the deck. Doubling down on Investigation hadn't paid off. Now it was time to buy some insurance with Damage Control.
He waited for a few moments to make sure no one was going to vehemently object before heading back out.
Autolycus
Autolycus peers through the peephole reverser. He sees a hallway with a closet at the end of it - and sees Barton aiming down the barrel of a shotgun, right at him.
Or rather, right at the door.
Going through that door without permission could get ugly.

Lycus leans away from the door, looks over at Nous and points at it with his thumb before mirroring Cut's shotgun gesture and 'aiming' at the door. Hopefully it was a clear enough message for Nous to get. He pockets the reverse peephole, it cost him seventy bucks and he wasn't going to give Nous seventy bucks. "I'm going with him," he says while nodding at Cut. "I'm sure you ladies can handle the business together here. If you can't, we're a call away."

"Tommy is the child that's going to get hurt because someone was running their mouth online. Sure, you're freaking out for your own safety, but I'm trying to make sure this kid is safe. So you want to work together on this or do you want to keep pointing a gun at my friend?"
Sure it's an ask, but someone said she's a cop, so why not appeal to her duty of keeping the public safe? It's what she does, and there should theoretically be a desire to see Justice through. Granted, there are also plenty of crooked cops in the world. Here's to hoping that she's not one of them.
"How about this. If you want to talk about how you two can stay safe, and want to talk about how we can keep Tommy safe, why don't you come open the door and point a gun at me too. We can't help if you're not in the market for being helped."
She's not giving up any more information on Tommy until that damn door is open and they're sitting around having a cup of coffee like good neighbors. No one has manners in this world anymore.

Autolycus and Cut
Autolycus and Cut head out of the building. It remains hot. Just down the road, a little black girl and a Hispanic boy remain lazily rolling around on bikes in the sun. The roofers remain working up above them.
Just another day in sleepy Sacramento, so long as gunfire doesn't break out in the tense situation upstairs.
