An eager nod to Sonnie, “It would seem so! A wonderful development!” it would mean the Seasons were complete this time around. She wouldn’t need to step in to bridge the break, they would remain safe. Well, as safe as they could be.
Aquamarines watch the Winter, picking up on the subtitle signs, he wasn’t a very social one. Making someone uncomfortable wasn’t her goal. So her voice becomes a bit softer, more gentle.
“I’m glad to hear it’s been well. Oh? How large was your previous Freehold?” she asks with genuine curiosity. “Sacramento’s number tend to fluctuate, not really sure why, but people come and they go. But I suppose the smaller numbers allow us to get to know each other easier and form closer bonds and friendships.” Maybe a brighter side?
“Oh.” A slight frown. “If it’s not too personal, or infringing on your Court, what do you usually do? Is it anything the Freehold can help with until something else comes along?” it was clear she was just trying to help him.
“I knew one of them well, Sasha. She was a Dancer and owned a Blues club, gave me a job when I first arrived singing there. Beautiful and kind woman, was a great asset to her Court and the Freehold. I’m not surprised you haven’t heard much; they tend to be private, and I only know what she shared with me. But she was fierce.” A chuckle as she seemed to remembering fond memories.
Or it seems Vincent could ignore her question. Circe shakes her head as he does that. Well his loss. She'd finish her own cup before sarcastically saying: "Eeeh. Va bene. È bello averlo sentito. Etichetta. Etichetta. Dovrei imparare un po'." Then puts it down, and goes back to seeing what was to be done with the books. She had to hand it to Kray, this was creative.
More books or just flutter over to talk? Circe shrugs, she had a few books already. What were the Winters and Springs talking about? Her right ear twitches as she picks it up. Then walks over to join them. "Heyo. Seems I'm not popular back there," she jerks her thumb towards where she had been. "Heard the word. Transient. That is a good word for how it goes around here."
That they needed the Wyrdstone should say enough. On the topic of Winters past., she thought about asking on LA. It HAD to be better than The Bay's Winter population. But maybe later. "Was Sasha in charge that time, ironically, I had to play peacemaker between the courts? And not the fun capital P John Cena Peacemaker, the boring kind."
Circe had been miffed with the other courts back then for that. And lording it over them too. She could use something she didn't like to taunt people, Circe is complex like that.
"If this freehold was ever large, it was well before my time. And I've been here like six years now," she commented.
After listening to Sera bring up Sasha, the Beast nodded, "I barely knew her, honestly. James was Winter King for most of my time here. Until he just... stopped showing up." Whatever did happen to him, anyway?
The ogre is aware in the sense he is aware people are moving about around him, that someone has sat next to but is rather absorbed squinting at the page of poetry in front of him. While certainly not stupid, poets had tenancy to prefer words otherwise often left in the dictionaries. Which is precisely what the collection he pocked up are for. In the process of looking up a word hither to unknown to him is when he cottons on that he is actually being addressed. Looking over to the vernal giant. "Huh? Oh. Uh." That's unexpected. The beast was decent enough in his opinion but he hadn't realised they had reached lets grab a bite to eat levels of acquittance yet. "Uh. Sure we can grab food sometime." Food was as safe a bet as it came the ogre after all. "Huh. All you can eat ribs." Ribs were good food, dangerous food, so tantalisingly close, but good food. "I'll have to put some money aside for that one, sounds good though. Drop the details on Edna's kitchen table. I'll find it sure enough." It was his plan so the details he would leave to Jasper, returning to his book unless the beast had more to say.
Sven had a neutral expression on his face. "For the whole Freehold, I couldn't say. I never really got to know individuals outside my own Court. A lot of faces with no names. Best estimate? Hovering around 30 Lost in total." He shrugged. "And I'm not even sure on that number." The Darkling started to idly twirl his spoon around his right hand.
He couldn't help but smile a little at the mention of the Winter King disappearing. "Yes, we have a tendency to do that. I don't think anyone except my fellow Winters in the old Freehold knew I was leaving." His expression grows a little wistful for a second. "I do wish I could have met some of them. Lady Sasha sounds like an inspiring woman."
Is there really any better time to say something than when there isn't a Winter Sovereign to punish you for it? A sigh. "Actually, I helped organize and staff Freehold social events. Part of it was because I had a lot of experience with that sort of thing, from the Bad Old Days." Even in passing it was uncomfortable to speak about one's Durance. He was twirling the spoon a little faster now.
"The other part was because people are very distracted during a conversation. They might speak a little too freely, won't be watching their pockets, might miss something seemingly obvious." The spoon came to a halt and Sven put it back down on his tray.
3 successes
His knife was gone. With a faint smile and a flourish, the utensil slid out of his left sleeve and onto his tray. "Put simply, I'm a liar and a thief. Or a spy, if you prefer." He folded his hands in front of him. Well, not being automatically pegged as a rat was nice while it lasted.
Sleight of hand is a contested roll, so anyone watching has a chance to spot him steal the knife
"My apologies, Circe, it seems I was distracted by the newcomers and missed your question. Of course, I'm doing well! Enjoying the festivities and the company. Always happy to see new faces in the freehold, and even happier to catch up with old friends."
Vincent raises his glass in a toast. "To new beginnings and enduring friendships!" He takes a sip of his drink before continuing.
"And yes, always up for a literary hunt! Though I confess, I haven't had a chance to browse the stacks yet. Any recommendations for a wolfish soul like myself?" He flashes a playful grin. "Perhaps something with a bit of bite?"
Turning towards Jasper, he nods in acknowledgment. "And thank you for the invitation, Jasper. I appreciate the offer and would be glad to join you sometime. All-you-can-eat ribs, you say? A challenge I can't refuse!"
And here comes Vincent back. The hound got distracted he says? Part of her wants to comment about Beasts and decoying, but she refrains, tapping down her brief release of Mantle. Instead, Vincent gets a nod from Circe, "Accepted."
As for wolfish souls seeking biting books?
"White Fang," she suggests off the top of her head. She wasn't much of a bookworm, but even she had heard of that book. "Wolves and teeth, with a story to it. Treasure hunt if I recall right."
She'd read it, maybe, before getting taken. School reading or something probably.
Thank you all, hope you had some fun! 30 days, closing it up and will get status open!
