Crafting a Dress (Hedgespin)

Sera had the design, and the ideas. Now she needed the material, and the ingredients from the Hedge. Which wasn’t too bad to get, she had become comfortable trekking through the Hedge to gather what she needed. Enjoying interacting with the various Hobs at their booths, bartering for what she was after. Though some of the ingredients had proven a bit more difficult to obtain, but not impossible. It just meant being extra charming and trading more than she intended. But it would be worth it.

With Cassandra’s measurements in mind, she locked herself away in her Hollow, prepared to throw herself into the work. As she always did. Each Hedgespun item she made came from the heart and she put her all into it.

Though much to her dismay, they dress was proving extremely difficult to craft. She kept messing up the stitching, nothing was lining up right. It took her numerous nights sitting there, pinning the fabric and sewing before it finally came together. At the end, sitting back, fingers bruised and bandaged, she had the dress.

After an evening off to recharge and eat something, she was back in her Hollow.

In front of her sat the feathers, from a snowy owl, during its first molt of the season. Pure white with bits of puffy downy fur towards the end. These had to be placed carefully around the bottom of the skirt. And placed in such a way that movement would cause the feathers to gently dance and allow the snow flakes to catch the light of the first new moon. Emitting a warm and yet cold shimmer.

Each feather needed to be worked separately, placed one at a time. All while Sera would step back and watch it. If something didn’t shimmer or move right, it was removed and placed again. It was a process that took days to complete.

When it was finally perfect, well, perfect in her eyes, she moved to the bodice. Starlight was a trying material to work with. Delicate and requiring a precise placement, not leaving room for error. Barely tangible with touch, it required a feeling. The spinner needing to intuitively know when it was placed. Something else that had taken hours upon hours to do. But finally, the starlight that is visible after the first snow fall of the season, is worked into the material. There was the twinkle you would see in the clear night sky, drawing the eye.
