PrP Tunnel Trip

[Liam Gelt]

Liam rolls his shoulders as his Contract's power fades and the extra flanges on his arms recede. "Thanks, that's what I'm here for." Wait? She actually said my name that time! Perhaps the Giant's curse was finally over?
Feeling just a bit secure in his might, Liam walks back to the wheelbarrow and positions himself at the yoke. "I can handle the heavy lifting at the rear. After you, Ladies." He gives a deferential nod to Cassandra and Sera. He trusted their abilities of direction far better than his own, especially since these caverns were new territory for him.

[Cassandra Reeding]

Cassandra charts along as she goes, detailing everything she sees. She writes so quickly and neatly, that you'd almost think the pages look as if they came straight from a book. There are stains on the walls that she just barely spots as they are walking. They tell a story.

"Circe, do you see these stains on the wall? These probably came sconces and from the workers with their lamps, traveling through over and over again. I'll bet if we follow these stains, we get the primary route. Or at least a few very commonly used routes. I can't imagine there will be just one." There is a bit of an excitement in her voice, something unusual for the soft spoken Winter. Navigating and noticing small details as they go are becoming what she does, what she is good at.

She leads them along, following the route the stained walls seem to be taking them, keeping an eye out for anything else that sticks out. On a whim, she also sends out her senses, curious if there are any active Hedge Gates hanging around. Hedge stuff is Hedge stuff, so she has figured not to ask questions and get a feel instead.

[Seraphina]

And then, like that, the door was gone! Liam had broken through it! Go Spring! She looks to him and nods with a huge smile.

Reaching into her bag, she takes out her flashlight, turning it on. Waiting for Circe and Cassandra to head in. And even though this wasn’t really her thing, she takes a moment to look at the walls and floor, seeing if anything stood out.

Looking back to Liam, she nods. Feeling safe with him there.

For now, she was content to let the more knowledgeable ones lead and point things out. Her right hand still resting on her dagger.

[Circe]

Circe:
Liam's ecstasy at Circe knowing his name would not be corrected by the Summer announcing her error was trolling Cassandra. The Summer is fully prepared to go through the tunnels at speed until Cassandra stops her.


"Hmm?" Circe stops her march to follow Cassandra's light, eyes narrowed so mostly only her red pupils are visbile.

Then widen to show black. "Ha! Good find Cass, let's do that," she nods in agreement at the plan. Her red and black eyes now scanning the walls for more signs of the stain patterns as the follow the tunnel.

Circe thinks she knows how many steps they've taken since the door smash, pirate measure more fun and such. Oh, what is this? "Hey! Intersection ahead."

Narration: Cassandra does a good job of mapping out their route, about on par with old printed videogame map guides. Seraphina doesn't see the color difference in the stone. Circe can, probably, retrace their steps back. and Liam seems focused upon the three Fairest walking ahead of him. The stains are easy to follow for the group, mostly because they have yet to hit a serious divide in the tunnels. Those few off-shoots they spot as they explore have their ends visible in the light. Storage, toilets, traffic turn off, or unfinished paths is the most likely reason for such short off-shots.


Then they come to a 3 way intersection, giving them two new options to travel down. Cassandra is sure one is East and the other is North. The wall stains are a little harder to make out in this area.

Players may make a perception or survival check to search for stains. They may also roll Wits + Survival if they wish to determine which direction is which compass heading. Cassandra has done consistently well in the Survival rolls, so she can get a +1 to determine which way is North, South, East, and West because she isn't too lost yet. And everyone should be able to recall what is the first geographic feature West of Funderland: the Sacramento River.

The Giant takes in Sera's approving smile with a thankful nod. Granted, he was more impressed that Circe was pleased with his work; but it was still good to know his Monarch appreciated his talents. Bringing his vaunted strength to bear, the wheelbarrow pushes forward along with the rest of the crew.

As Liam brings up the rear of the procession, the tight dimensions of the tunnels begin to weigh on him. But more than that, the lack of sound. No birds, no breeze, no leaves; just the sound of footsteps, the wheelbarrow's wheels, and the echoed words of his Lost companions. Every sconce seems to look the same to the point where Liam wonders if these tunnels might not be like some labyrinth. But Cassandra seems to have a good sense of where we're going. Glad she's in the front.
At the intersection, Liam briefly sets the wheelbarrow down and scratches his pine-needle beard. "So, which way now?"

[Cassandra Reeding]

Cassandra takes just a moment's pause, getting a good feel for exactly where she is. She holds her map up, looking at the signs she's written down and then getting a feel for the tunnels themselves. She knows where the River is. She listens for sound and tries to find particular scents in the air.

It leads her to a conclusion, albeit not as strongly conclusive as she would like, which direction is which. She faces "North" then "West," then "South," and finally, "East". It's odd, it feels as if she's getting stronger and stronger at just feeling exactly where she is.

She looks between the three tunnels and does her best to point out which she believes keeps the main tunnel going and which she believes will be shorter tunnels like the others. "I'm betting this way is our best shot based on what I'm seeing." There is another swell of pride here for a moment because now it doesn't feel like a fluke of nature. It isn't just a fluke of the Hedge. She is actually good at this and she's being a kind of help that not everyone can be. Outside of this newfound skill, she's never felt that way before.

Is it... is it bad that she near forgot that Liam and Sera were there? How could you forget Sera was anywhere? That's not even possible. "Everyone doing alright back there?"

[Seraphina]

Oh, an intersection. Two different ways to go off, unless they stay the path they were on. Sapphires look from one way, to another, shining her flashlight at them as she does. Directions were never her strong suit.

“Maybe we should have brought glow sticks.” She’d seen that in a movie. They put down glow sticks to mark where they’d been. Looked like a good idea in the movie.

“I suppose that’s up to everyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if the tunnels lead off to some rusted shut exits outside the grounds.” Maybe even well-hidden ones. “Which would be good to map out and secure. But there is something to be said for going deeper into the tunnels, see what’s at the center.” Maybe a smugglers treasure! Or just a bunch of trash.

When Cassandra spoke, she nodded, “You seem a natural at navigating this, so I’m going to trust you on what way we should go.”

[Circe]

At Liam's inquiry of directions, "Well," she looks to the left-ish tunnel. Spots a single stain. The right-ish tunnel? Also one stain, "No idea! Just know West will get us wet" Then points at Cassandra after she points out the directions and the proper path, "The tunnel mistress is ta be followed. Experts, listen ta them."


Circe giggles at Seraphina's suggestion of glow sticks, as she pulls one out of her coat and waves it in the air, "What should? Though I don't have enough fer bread crumbs. Should'a brought sidewalk chalk." Though Circe didn't see the point in leaving a trail as Cassandra was a tunnel master. And seemed to be making a map. As for what could be within the tunnels, "True, though rusted shut means less work ta secure it. And on the plus side," she turns back to the Seraphina and Liam with a smile, "CHUDs are a New York thing, wrong coast."


With that, Circe heads down the tunnel Cassandra suggested, for if you couldn't trust your experts, you were lost.

Narration:
Cassandra realizes the South West path had less stains as opposed to the North one. So their best option was apparently away from the river for the old main route. Someone once prioritized that way.


The other 3 Lost spot nothing of note unless it is pointed out to them by Cassandra. Circe at least remembers the route they are taking. Perception checks may be a good idea for possible reasons.

Liam gives Cassandra a nod and a thumbs up. "So far so good! We got your back. As the crew advances through the tunnels, Liam tries to take little moments to look around the tunnels.

With little catching the Giant's interest or alarm, he decides to focus more on the crew in front of him. Sera in particular had gotten him thinking after she mentioned glow-sticks. Could Sera glow in the dark if she tried really hard? Could any of us do that? Maybe Eleanor...Titania...maybe she could.
"So how'd you get so good at navigating, Cassandra?" The outdoorsman in him was intrigued that a Fairest was so adept in the wilds. Not that any of the Fairest he'd met were slouches when it came to being reliable, it was just Cassandra seemed particularly gifted beyond Arcadian standards. She seemed to really enjoy it.

"I appreciate it," She says to Liam. Cassandra keeps on moving, but there is a bit more of a giddy joy to her. It causes a bit of a brightness in her prismatic skin and even the warming Winter sun of her mantle seems just a hint warmer with the frozen breeze. Of course, given the mantle all around, it isn't felt too much. It feels as though she is being overly complimented on her navigating abilities and she can't help but blush a little. It distracts her. "Tunnel Mistress, huh? Might keep that title," She chuckles.

"Well, someone had to. We had a Woodswalker once who disappeared in the Hedge and... since then, I just felt like someone had to do it. No one in the Freehold is particularly skilled with it and I've never quite felt the useful kind, so it's been kind of nice to find that I'm good at it." Never felt useful in the slightest. Even now, in a fight, she's practically defenseless. It's never enough. She has to train more, get faster and stronger. Will it ever be enough?
