Hedge Patrol II

[Cassandra Reeding]

Cassandra takes a deep breath before saying, "There's definitely going to be trouble afoot as we go along. I can sense something along the path. Not sure how far up it's going to be, but there's something that is sparking my sense of danger." Her airy voice is quiet and even as she speaks, she still looks incredibly focused.

She is relieved when she receives confirmation that the bugs don't seem to be lingering from before, "Good. I've had enough Hedge beauty rest for the next year." she wanted it to come out as somewhat amused, but it came out more stale than she'd intended.

Even still, she guides the others along the path, watching the signs, keeping her navigational senses focused. As she goes, she even begins to feel more... confident? That's a new feeling. She'd never felt any kind of air of confidence in the Hedge. Perhaps it is a sense of finally not feeling overtly useless.

She merely listens to the discussion on fetches, not really feeling that she really had much to add yet to that point of conversation.

[Saber Sloth]

They make impressive progress. Their familiarity with the area bleeding through, the Lost quickly out pace where the last Patrol had ended, aided by the fact that those sleep poisoning insects have gone, fleeing the Ogre that had decimated their numbers. Their goal today isn't to make it to Capitol Park, but to find a Hollow, with only rumours to guide them.

Ram, keeping a weathered eye on their surroundings is the one to notice it. A rustling of the brambles,

Still facing forward Ram couldn’t help but smile at the praise from the Stonebones.

“Never really done anything with dreams. The whole meditating in the Hedge… well sitting still while clearing your thoughts isn’t really my strong suit to begin with. And not knowing what it’s capable of,” he shuddered to think “I know those things can turn the tables really quick if you’re not careful.”

Cassandra mentioned that was definitely danger and Ram did a stutter step as the Hedge rustled. However, looking again all he saw were the Winter thorns, still and cold. Had he imagined it? Had it simply been a breeze? Or was something out there?

“Possible movement,” he whispered, using two fingers to point to his eyes and then pointing with a straight palm to where it had come from. Ram himself, slowed his pace very slightly but kept going, looking in the opposite direction for signs of an ambush or if they were getting surrounded. Was it wrong to hope that the warning had just got him on edge?

[Gerrit]

Cassandra's warning and Ram's confirmation made Gerrit perk up. They had made good progress, which is why he maybe slacked off a bit. That's what you get for becoming complacent.

He shook his head and really watched instead of just looking around. Was it the insects again? Did their talk about Fetches attract something else, something even more dangerous? The Ogre's bruises gave off a dull ache as blood was pumped through them at a faster rate. This was no time for words, so the Stonebones remained silent.

"Wise. Still. If you ever want to go looking... You don't have to go alone. You have friends and allies who can help. You can even craft Pledges that can..."

His voice trailed off as first Cassandra and then Ram himself, turn their attention from the trail to what lay ahead.

Anatole comes to a stop and carefully slides his ax from his shoulder; holding the weapon readied in both hands.

Even he is watching and listening now.

The Fairest pauses with the others, sharpening her senses. The breeze catches her skin, but doesn't defeat her focus. She is aware and she draws her knife, keeping it low and to the side. No more sneaking up. No more games. She wouldn't let her lack of physical ability hold her back. She is completely silent, waiting, watching, yet her stance is ready to run at a moments notice.

Knowledge of the danger the Hedge represents, has the Lost on the lookout, eyes pealed, senses sharp, but not sharp enough. Baring one, the Stonebones, Gerrit sees something rustling in the brittle branches of the undergrowth....

"No contacts," Ram informed the group when he didn't see any signs of ambush.

It was a lucky thing he'd slowed pace because it took him a couple moments to notice that the Wizened had stopped. Even so, there was now a gap between them and the tail of the group. Not ideal.

"Stick together," Ram said coming to a stop himself so they could catch up but he didn't want to stay put. Maybe he shouldn't have said anything. If they were going to come to a halt every time a twig twitched this would be a long trip and getting through the Hedge as quickly as possible was probably still their safest option.

[Gerrit]

Being at the rear Gerrit naturally stopped when Cassandra and Anatole did so. Ram seemed to have missed the movement in the Thorns, so the Stonebones tried to catch the Render's attention and motioned him over with a sharp movement of his hand. After what had happened last time, he wanted to keep them together and he definitely wanted Ram near them if something decided to jump them.

"I think something is over there." A hissed whisper to bring everyone up to speed, pointing in the direction he saw the movements in. "Being undecided and careless didn't do us well last time, so we need some shots called in case I'm not just imagining things: confront whatever it is or run away?" He tried to talk quickly without losing the clarity of his words, all the while scanning his surroundings.

Had he been imagining things? On the one hand, you couldn't be too careful out here. On the other, every hour spend in the Hedge was a bigger risk. Still, I can't see anyone else get hurt again.

Anatole remained where he stood, his weapon still raised. He scanned the Hedge around them, then twisted slowly so he could cast a beady eyed glance down the path.

He had no idea what Gerrit had seen.

"Well. If something is there, it must know we are on to it by now..."
