(Broken Cycle) Firing Squad

[Sonnie Wu]

There was a low hiss from between clenched teeth as she caught the scent. Not an old one, either. The damn dogs were still around. Quietly, Sonnie pulled a foot-long stick from inside her clothing. Black wood, capped on both ends with gold. There was a sidelong glance towards the others.

"They're still around. Stay on your toes." she whispered, hackles rising.

At least with Circe and Coco here this time, they were in a better position to fight.

A flick of her wrist, and the stick extended to a full six feet. It was a hedgespun quarterstaff! The gold caps had leering simian faces on both ends. The black wood had monkey tails spiraling carved (and inlaid with more gold) around the shaft, meeting in the middle.

Hefting it to one shoulder, the Beast slowly moved forward. Quietly. In addition to her general stealth, she magically erased her trail, as well!

Seeing the fur made her shudder slightly. Seemed they followed them and waited. That wasn’t comforting. At all.

But, they had more fire power this time. Not that she wanted to have to fight them, because they had a mission to do. And dealing with Briar Wolves was not it.

A nod to Sonnie.

Taking a deep breath, she follows, trying to be careful and sneaky. Spying the Beasts weapon, she realized she really needed to get one.

Circe also nods to Sonja instructions, "Right, nobody move in front of me when shooting starts. "

Circe wasn't sure if they could do this quietly or at all if the mangy mutts had functioning noses. Unless the petrol repelled them or something lucky. But if she could get a couple of seconds to line up a head shot? That'd save her ammo fur burst firing into them instead. Or maybe kneecaps? The others seemed keen on burning the mutts.

The Lost slink forward, carefully, ever so carefully. The Beast, knowing that, or perhaps more paranoid over the predators patrolling, calls upon the Wyrd, and is granted, that anonymity of smoke.

The Summer follows, mind of the eventuality of an encounter.

Sera, the Spring Queen, steps light, she's quiet, but not silent. Or this is the impression as first one wolf howls, calling the rest to join in.


Would the Lost double down, and find a stationary place to hide, or would they try their luck and keep on their feet...?

The howls were hard to read. Bestial communication, to be sure, but the Briarwolves were not ordinary animals. It was doubtful her Contracts would help her understand what they were saying to one another.

Sonnie banished the part of her mind that urged a retreat to the treetops. As before, she wouldn't abandon her friends on the ground.

What choice, really, but to continue forward? She'd just have to keep careful watch for signs of movement, both visual and oratory.

Circe didn’t have to remind her that standing in front of a gun was a bad idea. It should go without saying, at least to her. But she nods anyways.

Her breath caught in her throat when she heard the howl. They were still nearby. That wasn’t good, but maybe they could get past them. Maybe. Hopefully. If luck was on their side.

But which way was it coming from? And there really wasn’t a direction that would be more comforting for her.

Sapphires look around, then to Circe and Sonnie. Were they going to keep going? She’d follow their lead.

Circe swings the rifle about, trying to figure out which way the mutts were coming from. She had enough combat sense to try to keep her back facing towards Seraphina or Sonja. Her ears twitch as she tries to be ready. She had the ammo to do some damage for sure. And the Molotovs can block their lines of attack.

Wasn't that why they'd been made?

Each of the Lost know that the Wolves are to the right and behind them. From the direction of the howls, and their own knowledge of the area, it seemed like the Briar Wolves had been circling the Tavern itself. Searching for a way in, searching for their prey, searching for them.

To Sonnie, she can see the trampled undergrowth, the directional nature of how the grass is bent shows that they've been moving systematically. Clockwise, in a tight corkscrew around the Tavern.

They keep howling, and the sound is getting closer.

The Trod, they knew, was close.

The flea-bitten freaks were close, but they hadn't zeroed in on the Lings' position. Yet.

There might still be a window where they can slip through. It sounded like the pack was behind them at the moment. Sonnie, wanting to avoid the predators as much as possible, pushed forward quietly. If they could reach the effigy clearing before the wolves swung around, they'd be clear to burn that mother down and then flee home.

Ideally, anyway.

Well, that wasn’t something she wanted behind her. But, in some ways, maybe it was better then in front? Both sucked. And they were going to have to kill them at some point. Being that close to the Tavern was not safe.

Glancing to Sonnie, and seeing her continue forward, she will do the same. Her nerves on edge, the howls chilling, eager to find the damn stag and get this over with.
