Ushered over the depths of the pacific ocean, a pall of cold, grey clouds descended upon Sacramento, casting the city in dull shadow and ashen fragments of light. Seldom was the sun seen, and for every appearance that that brilliant celestial body made, the sky drew drab and oppressive once again, drawing an even deeper gloom back over the land. Slowly, eyes starved for color and light as every dawn revealed slate skies and every night swarmed in with crushing black. It was among this backdrop of soul eclipsing, grey banality that the news of an art gallery opening spread throughout Sacramento, heralded by a flock of flyers and pamphlets splashed with color and adorned with the lush fruit of creativity that swept through the city. Yet it was not just the promise of vibrant spectacles and stimulating sights that captured the interest of the Temoins du Sud. No, it was the promise of one show in particular, an artist feature held on the last day of the galleries week long run of changing displays. For, this particular artist, Leeba Bacman, seemed to have an uncanny knowledge of the members of the Temoins du Sud themselves.

The first witness to the oddity of Leeba Bachman's chosen subject matter happened to be an artist herself: Damascus . In the tattoo parlor where the Shaman worked she found a pamphlet for this particular gallery show, held at the Gutenberg Gallery which had opened in South Sacramento. The pamphlet gave descriptions of the different shows being held, but more importantly it also had photographs of different works which would be on display and for sale at the shows. On the back of the pamphlet was one such photograph. It showed a painting of a young woman, lying upon a black and white tiled floor, features contorted in ecstasy: eyes half lidded, brows drawn up, lips parted in gasp or moan. One of the woman's arms was stretched out languorously and from a slashed wrist a pool of blood had formed upon the tile before her, reflecting her visage in crimson tones with a halo of scarlet feathers above her head. The woman depicted in this painting was none other than Damascus herself.

Disturbingly, this depiction of a Southern Witness was just the beginning of a pattern that each would see a piece of. Thus, while walking along the street, Truce came across a flyer posted to a telephone pole, the image upon another photograph of Bachman's work. The painting showed Truce sitting in a dining room suffused with dove soft light, a beatific smile upon his face. Across from him sat a young woman, perhaps of high school age, who's features were somehow indistinct, as though they'd been captured out of focus. Her smile was similarly wide, though it held a measure of sadness along its curve. It was none other than Chelsea, his lost love.

Einstein's discovery was not as mournful as that of the Moros, though in its way it was no less disturbing. Another flyer was found, this one by one of her students. It was Tracy, a student who had a problem with a certain tendency not to attend, who came to school that day expressly for the purpose of showing her find to her teacher. This image showed Einstein during her college days, no doubt towards the end of her mundane studies. The hour was late and shadows crowded the student Einstein in her room. Her computer was before her, the lone source of light, and though the screen itself could not be seen, fantastical images spilled out of it as though it was a portal to some strange realm. Brilliant colors depicted fantastical creatures that would have made Lewis Carrol froth with envy, yet none were as attention grabbing as the miniature, fractal owl which soared majestically towards her.

Unsurprisingly, a fantastical scene which delighted and inspired a student is not what Gyges of the path of Scourging found. One of his cultists approached him after a ritual with a pamphlet for the Gutenberg Gallery; more specifically, one image in particular: sitting on the edge of a brick building, at sunset, was the figure of Gyges lighting a cigarette. A small red hole in his temple leaked a line of blood down his cheek and the flame of the lighter cast brilliant reflections of flame into his eyes, and, somehow, gave rise to stark shadows rising behind him. Something about the brush strokes seemed to suggest wings, black against the orange glory of the sky.

Lastly, Crowley , Herald of the Consilium, perhaps because fate can seem to enjoy a bit of irony, is handed a pamphlet after a gig. The local fan has it, of course, turned to the page which depicts the drummer himself. It's a scene, late at night, with Crowley lounging on a park bench, laughing at the comment of his companion next to him: the figure of a portly man in a green and red checkered costume, with tights and shoes bedecked in bells. An Elizabethan frill sits upon a ragged neck stump which squirts a thin arc of blood into the night air. It seems that this is what the image of Crowley is laughing at, though somehow the form of the headless jester seems contorted in mirth as well. The fan asks him why he doesn't use this for an album cover.

No matter the reactions of the Temoins du Sud, one thing is clear: Leeba Bachman knows something about them. Her show is happening in a few days. All that's left to do is decide how to act.

Feel free to discuss collectively in an IC location of your choosing, or to decide OOC how you want to approach this scenario and then let me know via PM.

Gyges had called together the cabal in the living room of their shared Sanctum to discuss the matter of the Pamphlets. He would have investigated something like this about him anyway, but when he found out everyone had their own copy? That set off alarm bells.

While he waits, he chants and opens his Third Eye, scrutinizing the pamphlet* for some idea of why this was made.

Einstein wouldn't have troubled herself with a simple painting of her on a pamphlet, normally. Especially when it had been brought to her by a student (though she was happy to actually see that slacker in school for once). She would have looked at it as a cute joke or tribute to her incredible-ness by her students, and put it up on the wall or on the Cabal's refrigerator. In all likelihood, she would do that anyway. Commemorate the first time something incredibly creepy showed up for them.

But. There was one detail in the picture that had set off her alarm bells. Parliament. As a Spirit, none of her students should have been able to see the owl, no matter how much he sat around in class. She knew because she had spent a class staring at the students through Mage Sight once. None of them set off any bells.

Einstein entered the living room, pamphlet in hand, staring at it pensively. She dropped into the couch, nodding at Gyges. Apparently everyone had gotten one. And hers was the least creepy. First Point: Einstein. "So, everyone got one? What's yours look like?" Parliament followed her in, just as surprised as her, though probably a little more proud. He was always sure someone wanted to paint him anyway. Now he had proof.

Boxes containing the possessions of the Necromancer still remained unopened at the Sanctum just off of X Street. And already there appears to be a problem for their newly formed Cabal.

Truce is more than a little rattled by the flyer, which he had torn down and carried back with him. His demeanor is flustered and he had set the paper on the table quite firmly, explaining the gravity of such knowledge regarding him as being somehow violating. But such observations were no doubt obvious and Truce takes a moment to calm himself before continuing when everyone has arrives.

He had done a little research before arriving and is keen to share it with his comrades.

"I haven't told anyone about Chelsea other than all of you. I mean, I hinted at it to Bishop and Darkslide but there weren't any details. And it's of her likeness. No one else has even seen her. Could it be a Scelesti ploy, some message to mock me? But then why include the rest of you? Very strange, very strange," he says, pacing about the room slowly and gravely.

If Chelsea is about, he isn't aware as he's yet to perform any workings.

Crowley appeared haggard and worse for wear. A faint tang of alcohol broke through the aroma of cigarette that hung about him like a vestment; hair a mess; unshaven; eyes blood shot. He badly wanted to forget that basement... and the supreme sacrifice... and now a picture had sent those memories crashing back down on him.

"I got a fantastic album cover," he remarked, voice rank with bitterness and edged with anger.

Glowering, he checked his smart phone for messages one last time before settling down to the meeting. Hand curled into a fist so it couldn't go rummaging for either cigarette or drink.

Damascus entered looking upset. After seeing the picture of herself at work she’d headed for the bathroom where she could chant a little in peace and replenish her defensive measures, though she'd fumbled the workings in her agitated state. She sat down in one of the chairs without uttering a word, a faraway look in her eye, casting the pamphlet onto the table for the others to look at if they pleased.

The weight of the ashen sky descends towards Sacramento in wisps of fog, enveloping all in a cold embrace. The sanctum of the Southern Witnesses provides safe haven, though for some the sky is merely a reflection of what is already harbored within their minds. Yet, regardless of the perfidious unpleasantness of the weather, there is work to be done. Einstein had set to work on the one thing she knew she could find some information, the meaning of Leeba's name, for any little bit could help. Truce is not far behind in his own research, and they both find that Leeba means Beloved (which Gyges, a fluent speaker of Hebrew, could have told them), and that Bachman indicates someone who dwells by a stream or a brook. This the Hebrew could not have told. Regardless, after putting all of their findings together, they find that their potential tormentor is the Beloved Dweller of the Brook!

    Truly, a terrifying name.

Nevertheless, Truce braves on and seeks more information! Artists are often an educated lot, or so society would like to tell you, and so there is promise that records of the painter exist within the academic world. Unfortunately, it is not an official record which the young Moros is able to acquire, though one of his colleagues does remember an interesting bit of hearsay from his time as a doctoral intern at the Sac-State Counseling Center. It seems that young Leeba was a rather disturbing person to have as a room-mate, not to mention inconsiderate. Up at all ours of the night painting, muttering things about entrails, violence, and the genocide of east Indian geckos. Then, on top of all that, she'd deny she'd ever said any such thing, took no responsibility for her actions, and actually complained to the RA about her room-mate trying to badmouth her! Definitely not what anyone would call stable, and, unsurprisingly, Truce's colleague ended his little bit of gossip by adding that Leeba got kicked out of Sac State during her junior year. Something about stalking...

Yet, Truce is not the only one to gather a bit of hearsay. The Herald, indeed, is also rather skilled when it comes to such things, and it seems that the halls of academia are not the only place that the Beloved Dweller of the Stream has left her dubious mark. In the world of underground music, the name Leeba Bachman is known. After getting booted out of University, resume trashed, and the weight of student loans already bearing down on her, Leeba took to taking out some of her rage at the world by picking up cans of spray paint and going to town. Literally. Thankfully for her, it wasn't the cops that caught up with her, but a small fan base of punks and metal musicians who liked her "edge". So she dropped the spray paint and picked up some bucks making flyers and merch for local gigs, drawing all kinds of crazy shit and then sticking them to walls and street lamps with a nice layer of wheat paste. DIY at its best. She even made the album cover for the one band from that group to get a record deal, Gar-dena. They'd never made that album, though. Just dropped off the face of the earth...

For the other two members of Temoins du Sud, the information they seek lies within the disturbing documents themselves. Spells are woven over their senses, and the two Magi get to work. One thing becomes immediately clear to both of them: the pamphlets are entirely mundane. No supernal essence lies around them, no terrible concoctions of negative emotions, just dense, dense, bits of pigment slathered over paper. That does not mean they are entirely clear of emotion, however. There is a lingering trace of something. Something insidious. For a moment, it seems as though hands tug at the purse and pockets of Damascus. Gyges tastes caviar. The message is clear. There is a lingering trace of greed on each piece of paper. By the blessing of the Third Eye, however, Gyges learns a bit more. It seems that the pamphlets were intended to inspire interest, to shock and intrigue, to draw attention. They are, in short, meant to advertise. More cannot be learned. It seems that the representation of a work of art, within a larger context, obscures his insight into the true intent behind the creation of a painting. Perhaps if he could see them in person...

"So we have a mentally unstable college dropout with a habit for stalking," says Truce in conclusion after sharing the rumors he had acquired from his colleague. "Again, this is just hearsay, so there's really no evidence. I imagine we'd have to investigate school records to learn more about her. But if it's true about her being a stalker, perhaps she's just been following us. But that still doesn't explain her insight into each of our natures in order to paint unless she were somehow gifted with the Sight."

At least they have some information about her, and that calms Truce somewhat as he sits down in the living space of their Sanctum. He looks to the others to see what their thoughts are.
