    Ozymandias

Ozy made her way home to her computer. It wasn't much, but it would do; ultimately, this was a forum hack. It wasn't like darksidesacramento was a website run by the NSA, was it?

    Was it?

Cut might've said Paranoia Will Destroy Ya, but every good Guardian had a little paranoia going on, right?

Settling into her chair, Ozymandias logged onto the site and got to work.

The first step was to break into the website's database. As it turned out, there wasn't some NSA super-sysop sitting there waiting to stop her. It was some shitty PHPBB forum, all pre-fab backgrounds and unpleasant colour schemes. She went to work on the back end, slowly tearing through the website's defences. It took time. It always did, but Ozymandias was smart and reasonably capable. She'd get there.

An hour later, she was in. She looked up Decibel and Blue's IP addresses.

    Interesting.

They were the same. A quick Google search pinged the IP address somewhere in South Sacramento. That was about as far as she could get on the location, but there was one more thing she could do. She disconnected from the website and went to search up who owned it online using WHOIS and a bit of computer mojo.

Ding, ding. The owner of the IP address was "David Barton". A Google search of this name reveals nothing special. David Barton is a really, really common name, even in South Sacramento. In the phone book, there are about nine, and that's just the people who are listed.

    Autolycus

Autolycus makes his way to the public library, which contained many things. Books. Microfiches. Students. And, most importantly for his purposes, records of local newspapers. With a nod to the librarian, who points out where he needs to go to find those records, the roguish Mystagogue goes to work poring through the recent papers.

It takes time. All research like this does, but an accidental electrocution would be totally newsworthy. His first thirty minutes yields no real results. He spends more of his time getting his research station set up and whatnot than actually getting results.

Thankfully, that work was worthwhile. For the next second half an hour, the amateur researcher went to town on those papers, skillfully dismissing papers that did not contain what he needed and tracking things down that did. He narrowed it down.

There were clues. About a month ago, he saw a reference to the police concluding that an electrocution in South Sacramento accidental. It wasn't much, but he knew he was on the right track. He searches on. Then he finds it, in the third half hour: a newspaper article with a good picture of an intersection in South Sac.

High school teacher, 35, dies in electrical incident

The particulars in the article, he found, didn't matter mostly. What mattered was the name of the deceased, Felix Harris, and the date of the incident, April 1, 2014. The powerlines had come down on him, and he had suffered a serious electrical injury to his chest. Was the city negligent? What a sick April Fool's joke.

It took some scoping out, but taking one of the library's magnifying glasses, he was able to discern by looking at the photograph that the incident apparently occurred near 5600 Mendocino Boulevard in South Sacramento. It was a mostly residential area with houses and apartments nearby.

His last half an hour was mostly cleanup. There just wasn't much more to find.

    Nous

Nous goes to work and prepares the studio. No big deal. This is what she does for a living. It takes a bit of time, but that's the price of doing it right.

If an interview is to occur, well... lights, camera, action! She'll be ready.

    Cut

Cut does a great job showering. He got the water just right, that perfect temperature where it's just warm enough, but not too hot.

    Nice.

And then, when he exited and checked darksidesacramento and his post on the thread, he found something. No reply in the thread. It was a private message.

Apparently, the guy wasn't a total idiot. But he was talking.

With her information prepped, Mandy made her way back to the Circle, her fingers flipping absently through a phone book once she'd reached the location. She scratched off a couple of the names as she cross-referenced with a map, narrowing it down to four David Bartons... What a nuisance. The other thing that was on her mind... if the two people supposedly shared an IP address, were they the same person? Or... were they roommates? Roommates would suggest the possibility that their apartment might've been overlooking the situation when it happened...

She wasn't exactly about to count on the others. Really she'd come back here to talk to Cut more than anything, though she wasn't entirely sure he was going to be particularly useful, either. She groaned to herself a little, rubbing at her temples. This was why she worked so much better on her own. Why was she working in a group, again? What part of her thought this was a good idea?

Even still, she remained seated, waiting for the others to arrive, begrudgingly though it was.

    Autolycus

Auto was feeling cocky. Once he got his research done, he went ahead and typed up a quick summary of his findings (no way was he giving out a copy of his handwriting to magi he just met, even if he was working with them), printed out four copies of it, the relevant articles and the map. A quick stop at Staples and he had them all sitting pretty in four individual folders.

There was even time to stop in at a Jamba Juice for a celebratory drink. Carrots. Apples. Ginger. Cayenne Pepper. 'Carrot with a kick'.

Arriving back at the meeting room, he hands Mandy one of the folders and puts the two of the others on the seats for the others to look at when they arrive. "You find anything linked to a Mendocino Boulevard with the IP thing?" Look what you can do with a team.

He almost stayed in the shower. All day. It was that good. Like a return to the womb. The stall needed a bench. That would really set it off.

Maybe it was the run. Or skipping a few showers on the way to Sacramento. Baby-Wipes don't compare. Whatever. That warm water raining down was it. It wasn't until it started to cool that he realized he'd lost track of time.

    shit

There might have been time for a nap, if he hadn't taken so long. Whatever. His last set of clean clothes put him in khakis and a white oxford -- save the best for last -- and he foraged for lunch.

Eventually, he reappeared, frowning at his phone as he walked into the common area. Catching the tail end of Autolycus' question, he moved closer to hear the answer. Really? He was sure Handy Mandy found anything there was to find.

The folders got a curious look. Did Principal Ari drop off an orientation packet?

The plans for the studio set, she met back with the others. Her attire is the same as before. She makes a point to not mess with the success of an outfit. Beside, it neatly conceals the firearm strapped underneath.

    Folders.

"If you make it look like work, it's only going to feel like work." She sits and flips through the pile of papers inside the folder. "So we know who got bug zapped, but we do we know who witnessed it yet?" They don't have a precise plan yet, but the pieces are falling into place.

Sorry, was working all day yesterday. It's soccer tournament season, so my time can disappear quickly.

"Sure," Mandy stated after the briefest of moments, though she looked at the folders and raised a brow. Oh yes. Record trails. Because those were fantastic. Not bothering to pick the folders up, she looked specifically to Cut as she spoke, pulling out the worn old journal she carried with her so often and flipping through it a little bit.

    Mandy assumes Runehold Masque.

Disheveled as always, Mandy's fingers played on the pages of her book as she contemplated the information. At first... she came up with a blank. Despite her theory, she simply couldn't quite find all the pieces to put it together, almost as though she had a headache - well, of course she did, given the annoyance she still had with the man who had decided a paper trail was a good idea. After closing her eyes a moment and taking a brief period to recollect herself, she gave the information a look again. The things she'd found, the stupid papers the man had decided to share, the phone book and the map... all of these things needed to be considered.

Ozymandias reviewed the documents presented by Autolycus as she assumed the brilliant, eccentric Masque taught to her by her mentors in the Veils, his findings laid bare in beautifully prepared folders. Apparently, the Mystagogue was organized, even if she hated it. It took her some time to get her head in order in the Masque, getting used to the modified, sharper patterns of thought. It was as if she was more academic than she always was.

Her assessment, as she looked over the papers and her lists and own research, shook out three things.

The first was that this David Barton from the WHOIS was not listed on or about Mendocino Boulevard. That didn't mean shit, though. Most people weren't listed these days.

The next thing, that niggling theory she had, something about it made sense. Generally, people sharing IP addresses were sharing a common entry to the Internet. It could be the same router. It could even have been the same computer. Nothing was conclusive, of course, but her idea of the two witnesses knowing each other made logical sense to her as she compiled the data.

Last, in looking at the maps, was that there were at least five houses and three four-storey apartment buildings that overlooked the 5600-block of Mendocino Boulevard. There were plenty of places for there to be witnesses.

"The IP addresses on both of the posters is the same, and the one in ownership of the IP address is David Barton. I don't tend to deal in theories, but I'm not much for coincidence either - unless the poster is the same person pretending to be two different people, for whatever inane reason, chances are that the pair are roommates, or a couple, who know. And given the location of the IP address in relation to Mendocino Boulevard, an educated guess makes me think that it's very likely that their apartment overlooks the area... this is especially the case when you acknowledge the fact that there are a lot of residential locations that overlook the area," she stated, reciting her information and findings rather clearly to those assembled, though she didn't look up from the papers. "Trying to determine precisely which location the man is at... is the more problematic part."
