They'd both done scissors. Bad luck. Circe quirked her left eyebrow and ear, "Ah. Well then. Tie breaker time," seems they needed to give it another go.

The elf repeated the process, "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!"

"Hmm," Donovan grunted as they both came up with the same sign. It would make sense that Summers would go for the most weaponized symbol available. He really should have gone with rock.


"Alright," he says as Circe sets up for the next battle "Rock," he should go for rock, it was his go to "paper," but what would Circe choose? "scissors," there was that momentary thrill of fear changing to impulsive decision. Was this how Quick felt? "shoot."

"Hmm," he observed looking between his own hand and Circe's. "Well, guess that settles that."

[Circe]

Circe looked at their hands. She chuckled as she thought God save the queen: "I guess it does. Maybe I should look for a captain's hat while we're here?"

Out of a desire to go with the theme they had going, "So I guess that makes you vice captain, right? I mean they're no one else for the job," the elf was finding this whole thing hilarious, "and does my vice captain support celebratory burgers after this?"

The new Queen of Summer then recalled why they were here as she looked down at Donovan's feet. It was, very much, not a pretty sight. "So, uh, vice captain? How are those pair doing for ya?"

“Only if you can pull it off,” he snarked at the comment of a captain’s hat. He had little doubt she could. As he’d mentioned before, her looks gave her a leg up on social interactions he couldn’t hope to match.

“As vice captain I abso-fuckin’-lutely support burgers,” he replied with a smile at the mention of a free meal.

When questioned about the footwear he shrugged as he leaned back and forth to test how they felt. Already, he could sense the pebble appearing between his feet and the soles. Walking on pebbles was a constant thing with his mien. Still, the sandals seemed to at least not be retaining water and piss as much as his boots. Though being open toed would not be his first choice when hiking through the Hedge.

“Feel a’right,” he said. And he had to admit, with her paying, they could be the worst pair in the world and he'd probably still say they were fine.

Circe put on a contemplative expression, greatly exaggerated with her chin being gripped. "Only if it's a sea captain hat," and then laughed. She kept grinning as Donovan took kindly to being vice captain. She'd probably have to pay for the food too but she was trying to not be the bitch queen.


That title had been taken by someone that didn't like competition.


She tried to keep her face friendly as she saw Donovan's mien have its way with the sandals. The elf didn't know how those'd do for someplace Thorny, but they'd have to be better then the barefoot that Donovan preferred. "Eh, glad to hear it. Did ya see any others ya wanna try out? Or anything else here ya wanna get? Cause remember, I'm buyin' for this trip man so," she laughed, "You should have zero fucks to give on price."


Because the man really did need more clothes. At least if you asked Circe about it. And as his current queen, captain, uh. Queeny Captain she'd recommend it.

Donovan looked around the store and gave a slight shrug.

"Guess there's a military lookin' jacket over there. Might lend some credence if I hold a sign sayin' I was a vet." He began to walk slowly over to the olive green coat's location, checking to make sure Circe was following. Or maybe checking that she really was okay spending however the outerwear must cost. "Maybe one of the rugged backpacks they got around," he offered as an alternative.

"Though I doubt any of this would help blunt a punch," he added with a half smirk.

Circe had a confused look on her face as she followed him. Why'd he want to hold up a sign like that? Circe did eye the backpacks. They did look plenty solid. As for stopping a punch, the elf had to agree with Donovan. Even if she joked about it: "Well, I suppose it depends on what ya got in yer pockets, right?."


For a pack or a jacket. "I mean, if ya wanted something durable to wear, a leather coat would do. Not here though," Circe shook her head as she looked at the so called leather apparel. "Pretty sure that stuff," she nodded her head towards the leatherette display, "is first fake as fuck. Second, way over priced."


The gawky employee from earlier let out a loud huff, sending a glare towards the due before tutting off elsewhere.


She was all for treating Donovan, but not on something that was like 300% markup and as tough as denim. Plus all the fake leather coats looked like ladies apparel anyway: no way would those fit Donovan's shoulders. "Uh, ya mind if yer captain asks ya a question?"


She had lowered her voice. The elf was curious to ask her vice captain about something he'd said.

Donovan took down the green jacket and tugged a bit at the seams at the shoulder, as if testing to see if they'd unravel. He didn't trust the quality of this newly off the rack stuff. It might look tough but was it really?

"Should've gone to a thrift store," he said with a slight chuckle "Could probably find a leather jacket at half cost. At least."

Apparently satisfied he put it on, arms flailing for one second as he put his arms through the sleeves. Dirt scattered everywhere and when the dust had settled, the newly donned coat had a thick smattering of manure and straw on it that had appeared out of nowhere. Donovan found a mirror to see how it looked.

He made a grumbling sound that sounded sort of like "Mmmhmmm." It was difficult to tell if that was an affirmative to her question or just him mulling over the outfit but he didn't say anything more.

Circe tried to hide the grimace as Donovan's mantle soiled the green jacket into a darker shade. Vanity was a failing of all Fairest. While Circe might consider herself less vain, insomuch as she'd buy guns over a dress, then other Fairest she was still very glad her own Mantle was nothing like Donovan's. Her warmth let her save on winter clothing, to a degree. The elf internally laughed at that mental pun.


Circe quirked her left eyebrow and ear at the grumble coming from the Wizened farmer. She walked up beside him, right hand grasping her chin with the index finger tapping, like she was assessing his outfit. Circe was glad for her own height as it would make whispering to Donovan far easier: "I did not get that thing you said. About holding a sign. You trying to drum up patriotic business or something?"


The new Queen of Summer's tone was full of genuine curiosity. Circe thought that, with his Mantle, Donovan could get a job landscaping at Funderland or someplace. That Donovan could be pan handling never occurred to the Fairest. Even when her motley was at its lowest she'd opted for thievery over begging.

“You never seen someone sittin’ on the curb holdin’ a sign ‘bout bein’ a homeless vet?” he asked with a half smile that disappeared when he saw she was actually asking and not just joking around.

“Sometimes people give more if they think yer a veteran. Or are at least less likely to get kicked out of the spot yer takin’ a nap. Don’t always work but sometimes,” he explained.

“And if really don’t work and they find out you weren’t in the military, people tend to get really pissed,” he finished, smirk coming back slightly.
