“I'm a believer,” Avalon tells Star, still looking directly ahead to the dueling circle. “Understand?” The question both confirms Star's rhetorical as it both initiates a bit of her belief system. “The obstacle sets its terms and I will see if I can overcome it.”

Avalon is a woman of few words, mentally preparing for the Ordeal ahead of her.

He gave the woman a blank look.

"Like, uh, the Monkees song? They met the Beatles, once, you know. Fab Four? I think that's what they called the Beatles, back in the day."

Beatles, yo. Smiley's People were Beatles fans. Monkees, too.

"They got blackballed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Straight up, yo."

A helpless shrug follows Star's complaint about the Monkees missing out on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Critics will see what they want to see and will say what they want to say,” Avalon replies. “The Monkees getting in or not doesn't change the fact that we remember them. Doesn't change the fact that they had a hand in influencing music.”

Bangles crash against each other as she crosses one arm over her chest. “I doubt the Monkees need the induction when they've already made their mark.”

She purses her lips, the Acanthus instinctively knowing that it is time.

“Excuse me,” she tells Star leaving him.
