"Ow! Ow! Damn it! Ow!" Mal curses, arching her back as she staggers through the hole in the wall after Ava. She may wake up without a scratch, but it still hurt like a bitch right now!

The things you do for your friends...

There was something about being a ravenous, flesh-eating carnivore for a sizeable portion of your life that, no matter how poorly remembered, left one rather inured to displays of gore and viscera. Numbed to the shocking display as they entered the dissolving dream vessel, Mal was left feeling impressed, and just a little hungry by the Dread Queen's grisly efforts to hold it together.

That stupid figment of somebody or other's imagination was annoying anyway...

Having no wish to be caught in collapsing dreams this close to the exit, she hurried on. Shooing Ava ahead of her as she stopped to look back. She had managed to keep the Scriveness safe so far, despite dragging her into a fight with that nightmare juggernaut. She wasn't going to lose her now, either. "Go!" she growled, "You can start a fanclub later."

She knew, perhaps better than most, the fear the Witch Queen could conjure up on a whim. It was no surprise to Mal that their opponent didn't want to mess with her.

After they safely return to the boarding house in the Autumn Queen's dreaming mind, the beasts notice that Betony Rue assumes a more normal appearance which could very well be a reflection of her Mask. After gruffly calming the children down, she leads them to plain, yet comfortable beds upstairs and leaves them to rest. Settling into her chair by the fireplace, the ogress resumes her knitting as she speaks to the beasts.

"The children will be able to return to their own dreams once they have rested, however I assume that you were unsuccessful in rescuing your unfortunate elemental companion. He will need to be hospitalized soon if he is going to survive. I must stay here until the children can awaken. Scriveness, I believe it would be best if you were to look into this incident further. Keep me abreast of any information that you are able to uncover."

Ava gave the little boy she had spoken to first a small wave as Betony Rue lead the children away. Loitering in the parlor, she brushed her fingers across the insect bites and scratches and grimaced. It wasn't the pain that bothered her, the stinging or aching, but more the understanding of just how poorly that exchange had gone. Admitting that, yes, she had gone in knowing next to nothing didn't really help.

Discretely glancing at Mal, she tried to figure out how badly her friend was injured without turning her head before giving up. About to ask if she was alright, Ms. Jasons' return silenced her.

By the time the Autumn Queen had finished speaking, they had clearly been dismissed; Ava nodded once. "We'll see what he gets some care. And I'll... start looking." Looking to Mal once more, she headed toward the door she had come in from. They'd have to let Mr. Tickle know, or make some sort of arrangements, but that could be figured out once they were awake.

Mal was in better shape than Ava... barely. Being stubborn as a mule apparently had it's benefits in the dreaming world. It was stopping the gash across her back from bleeding all over Betony Rue's rug for one.

She felt a bitter, simmering anger in the pit of her stomach. Anger that they had failed. Anger that the mysterious sandman had just walked right over them. Anger that she had dragged Ava into a confrontation that had nearly got them both... she had no idea what it would have got them, if they hadn't escaped. But she doubted it would have been good.

She tried to find some anger to spare for the fellow Summer they had failed to rescue, but she didn't know the man. The only point of reference she had, was that he had jammed one of the sweets in his mouth, despite the warnings.

He kinda deserved whatever he got, to her mind.

Mal knew what Empathy was, she just sort of... missed the point sometimes.

She should, perhaps feel relieved that the children they had accidentally rescued instead of their fellow Lost could return to their own dreams, but the fact was, they hadn't stopped whatever was behind this. So they were hardly any safer...

They had no clues to go on, but she was resolved to find whoever was responsible, on more familiar ground. And end them. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, it may take years, and climbing a mountain of dead and comatose dreamers, stolen away.

    It was personal now.

Mal did not take losing well.

The witch queen grunts as she continues her knitting.

"After you have seen to the foolish elemental's care, I suggest you recruit a few others whom you can trust to assist you. You may also wish to consult with Dr. Carlton, he is very well-versed in these matters and can perhaps give you different insights than those you learned from the cookies I sent you."

The ogress' bloodshot eyes bore into first Ava, then Mal for a few moments before she continues.

"Be quite certain that you both can truly trust anyone that you ask for assistance with this matter. I cannot be sure, but it almost seemed that your adversary... recognized me."

As Betony Rue returns to her knitting, it is obvious that their audience with the Autumn Queen is over.

All three changelings awaken on the floor of Mr. Tickle's workshop. The wizened's face falls when they explain their failure to save the foolhardy elemental from the sandman's clutches, but brightens somewhat at the news of the rescued children. The diminutive toy maker offers to give them all a ride in his truck to the hospital, but Jason simply leaves without explanation. Shrugging, the surprisingly strong little man picks up Vincent and nods to the two remaining beasts to get the doors for him as he carries the elemental to his truck. As fate would have it, they overhear a few of the tearful reunions of the comatose children with their parents after they admit Vincent as a John Doe. Turning to investigate the sounds, Ava and Mal recognize a few of the small faces of the recently awakened prisoners of the dream dungeon, who look at them questioningly in return for a moment, but soon turn back to their parents in disinterest. And while it would appear that the children do not recognize the Masked faces of their changeling rescuers, they are still rewarded with a flood of love and emotion that swirls and eddies about them as each parent is reunited with the child they had feared lost forever.

    End Scene

Great Job! Ava and Mal will each enter their next BtH scene with full Glamour pools, however Ava will only have 2 Willpower and Mal will have 3.
