After some experimenting, the table started responding to Toren's voice. It interpreted what he said, and threw the information up on the various screens around the room.
As Dark Eyes walked towards the portal, she saw a pale blue eye looking back at her. It winked at her, and then vanished into nothingness.

"Ahha, there we go," cheers Toren at his success. He pulls his attention away for a moment to see what Dark Eyes was looking at but had missed the glimmer. "What is it, did you see him?" he says with growing concern. All the more reason to hurry this up. Turning back to the table he tries to command it to respond to him. "Athenaeum, access library of inscribed spells." It had to have one of those, right?
One of the screens pulls up a list of rotes the Athenaeum has access to. Several are greyed out. From their brief description, Toren can quickly asses that they are a subset of the effects within the purview of an Apprentice of Matter, Apprentice of Space, and Initiate of Death.

He was very glad that the table was working but that still didn't mean they were out of danger. "No, no, not this one," he says aloud as he reads down the list. He actually knew a good portion of these, especially in the Matter category. He needed something more powerful than Apprentice level, particularly in Space. "Athenaeum, would you be able to expand and fortify the current wards? Err, access Wards," he added, in case the Athenaeum couldn't follow complicated commands.
He would have liked to add a Ban to the Wards to prevent specifically their good friend, Dee, from getting in, but he didn't have much knowledge of living things to weave into the spell. All the same it didn't hurt to ask. "Access Bans?" he said hopefully.
As Toren pulls up information about the Wards and Bans, A siren starts to go off through the room. The lights shift to Red, and Toren can see the Athenaeum locking up on the displays. He selects his Ward and Ban requirements from the list. There's a tense moment as John's portal tries to open behind them, but the Athenaeum manages to shut it down.
Once the portal closes, the alarms clam down. Working together, Dark Eyes and Toren manage to use the Athenaeum's system to Sever John's ties to the Athenaeum and replace it in the Museum's care.
