While Mateus performs hasty written poetry about a man he has never meet to that mans drunk and elderly brother, also trying to cast space spells to get a follow on a mage who seems to have supplanted the consciousness of a sleeper? If his take away from the performed scrutiny is correct.
Asclepius is by the free bar gathering gossip and information a like about the family.
Thank you that honesty on the wp spend it slipped right past me good catch!
The thin man with high cheekbones shrugs playfully. "Only among those who think it is there's by right, envy is such a terrible color on people. In mourning or not." His smile is all sugar and smarm. "No such danger of any one at this table getting even a penny from the old man so where it he harm in a little fun speculating." The ease with which words slip from this mans mouth suggest he frequently makes use of smooth words and despite the air of being a gossip likely knows how to talk his way into many situations that he has no right business in.
The well dressed woman in her black dress puts up a hand and laughs politely. "Generous or egotistical? Is there a difference when people with money make such strange demands?" She tuts a little. "It is true he never beggared himself in life no matter what causes he might have supported." Her eyes linger on the house and walled garden. "He did not live in squalor did he." Which is a point beyond dispute. "A man does not put up walls if he wants to share." A keen observation if nothing else.
The more somber man with the broken nose, which is to say broken some many years past and never healed properly. "Respectful of his wishes? I do not see the point really he is dead and dead he is. He would not know and if anything of him lingers on someone, is probably quite beyond caring." He seems to be the grounding force, the man who stops the other to from gets caught in either flight of fancy or running away with insights that mean less then could be read into. "Why would you want to know about him? Many other in the city, around the world died recently, mourn they dead this very day, why not one of them?" Grounded and a bit suspicious apparently.
Without further ado, and trying to not attract attention to himself, Mateus climbs the stairs.

A light laugh is given to the man with the high cheekbones. “I see, you seem like a man that enjoys a little guessing game over the goings on? Would you say that the fun for you, is being correct? or is it being surprised by the outcome?” Is he trying to goad me into giving my own speculation on the inheritance as a sort of info digging? And is he trying to narrow down who the best person to buddy up too that is going to get the inheritance.
The well dressed woman is given a light shrug with a smile. “Well, you might have me there. I would say the difference between the two is intention. I think it fair to say perhaps he was the one that truly knows the secrets behind the curtain to confirm which it would be.” The tut suggested that perhaps there was something she did not like about him, envy? Was she money hungry? Maybe resentful? “I think no matter the wealth we have, we can all afford privacy to some degree. He does seem to keep a lovely home but I am guessing that something is not to your liking?” Lets not be obvious about it.
This man seems to have a more pragmatic mindset. That is fair, there are all sorts of viewpoints to take in life. “ I take it you do not agree that there is an afterlife of some sort then? Which is a perfectly valid viewpoint to have, of course. However, I do wonder what you meant by the second statement? You think he would not care? Was he a man about his own course in life and nothing else?” The Arrow paused for a moment. “My line of work unfortunately offers me the opportunity to see people sadly pass on without anyone to say goodbye, we do our very best to prevent that but not all can be saved. Why would I want to know? Because it is nice to be reminded that there is another side to the coin and because it seems fate decided that I would happen to walk down this road and stumble upon this welcoming wake. I see it as a sort of courtesy to at least learn about the man who opens his doors to those that walk about the street. However I can understand the questioning, not all who are about this city are so well meaning.” That was putting it lightly. Loose details with no concrete announcement of what his job entailed would hopefully be harmless.

Mateus attempts to climb the stairs unnoticed, which he mostly succeeds at if not for the direct attention of the old drunk man that was upon him. given that had up to that moment been engaged in a rather strange act of spontaneous poetry recital, this man is quite aware of the warlocks presence and destination but he is old and drunk and does nothing to contest the action other then mutter something under his breath.
At the top of the stairs a well appointed landing greets Mateus plush carpets south facing windows and two short corridors leading off from it one to the left and one to the right that snakes off around a corner before anything more of it can be seen. Additionally a sliding door to a balcony over looking the back garden.
Back at the open bar, the man with high check bones flashes that smarmy smile that comes all to easily. "Who doesn't my good man, everyone who knew the man will have it on their minds, and just pretend to being to polite to bring it up out of a worry they will look a little crass." No such reservations seem to hold this man back. "It is a skill like any other, being able to read people, to know them to work them out. Some watch birds, some collect spoons I hone my wit and mind to get a grasp on those around me." Which is a lot of words to not answer the question.
The well dressed women titters again. "Julian dear your a gossip plain and simple, and we love you for for it." The thin mans demeanor does not falter an inch for the accusation. Turning back to the arrow. "Sweet heart you can tell the intention of a rich person charity by how much they give away." Alluding to her point her earlier that the dead man had only seemed to give what was convenient for him to give. "No with his substantial bank balance being what ti was, I will call any act of charity simply a way to stroke his own ego instead of an act of goodwill." Sipping her drink as if someone drew a line under the topic.
The somber man takes in the answer to is own questions and pauses before answer. "I do commit to an afterlife one way or the other but the dead are dead and it would seem to be that if there is an afterlife then whatever endures has little to care for the living or what they did in life." Without moving he seems to indicate the house and people. "Money, relations, possession none of it goes with you so if there is something after evidently it is of no use to the dead." Sleepers of course know no better. "And what if you find, like my friend here." The well dressed women. "You come to the conclusion this party was simply a final brush of ego, some final oddity of an old man with a dying mind?" His own line of question quite relentless, or he seem sot think the other two are answering sufficiently that he need not.
If he was a mage possessing a Sleeper, Mateus would hide his comatose body well. If the mage in question is puppeteering the Sleeper using different magic, the mage would probably also be hidden. On a different train of thought, in such a house, there were bound to be secrets. Alone in the upper floor, Mateus takes a turn to the left get out of the sight of the drunken uncle and everyone else. Just in case he needs to scry or create a portal much later, Mateus picks up a piece of the plush carpet.
Finally alone with his thoughts, he decides on a somewhat unconventional use of a basic spell ( Spatial Map - Edge of Darkness Wiki ): He would try to map a large area in his mind, and look for suspicious "human sized" obstacles in hidden rooms. Now, that is not too easy to pull - he would need some radius and some duration, the imago would be hard to bring forth. He (assumes) he is alone, and as the others are in the lower floor discussing won't hear, so he focuses his mind through the Quantum Flux and speaks in High Speech to make it easier for the spell to land.

He was starting to wonder if the man with high cheekbones was just sceptical and untrusting of people. Surely someone here came to the wake because they thought of him positively and not because they wanted anything from him. Not they could get it, it would be too late. “That sentence sounds like it is spoken with a couple of people in mind. I have to say that I do agree to some level, politeness can be a poisoned chalice when it comes to interacting with one another.” The subtle indication for the man to offer more if he so wished about who he thought was faking for gain. “I suppose It could be a very advantageous skill to have. However does it not also have its draw backs because eventually you will lose all your trust in those you surround yourself with?” If there is no trust, it becomes a me against the world and not many people can live like that.
The Arrows head turns to the well dressed woman. Ah I see, his name is Julian. “Who doesn't enjoy a little indulge in gossip.” The Arrow nodded at the next points made by the woman. “Well I will have to take your word for it. If you don't mind me asking, how did you know the man? My first thought would be some business partner but no doubt I am wrong.” Taking the hint and tried to steer the conversation away from the previous one.
The Sombre man surprised the Arrow. Half expect him to double down and confirm he did not believe in an afterlife. I suppose there are many ways to justify it to make the inevitable end seem less daunting. “It is an interesting point of view you have. Do you believe then in this hypothetical, that whatever of him remains would not care for the family he left behind or the people he loved?” The sombre man seemed to be quite lacking in empathy in the Arrows opinion. The follow up question was something the Arrow had to take a moment to think on. “Then I would give the man his final moment of glory and then say my goodbyes in return. At the end of the day he is no longer with us and most that gather here were influenced by his life in some form or another. I get the impression that you perhaps have your reasons for your position and view of him.” final oddity? That could be a lead. “Oddity? Usually people that would describe someone with a big ego would say they act very typically. What made him odd in your opinion?” No need to be subtle, the sombre man said it after all.

After grabbing a few carpet fibers, Mateus did have a creative solution to the problem however fallen reality has other plans as the spell ... fizzles and fails. Which might be because eh is not as alone as he thinks having turned the corner the large house opens up into another central area with its own plant beds in the middle and several doors leading off around to most of the upper room from which having gotten a little closer to the sound of two voices giggling and thumping noises can be heard.
The man with high cheekbones chitters a playful as if the arrow had just said something funny. "A few people, why I reckon everyone falls into that category. Great wealth does something to the minds of people." That descriptor of skeptical is pretty spot on. "Oh, quite the opposite my good fellow I can trust people more completely then you would believe it possible to trust another person." He almost preens. "Know the person and you know precisely how they are likely to act, what they will and wont do, what they want. What they care about." Probably not what was meant by trust in the idea of a confidant or friend, but well he is sitting with two others who seem to more then tolerate his presence.
She smiles, that empty nothing smile of someone who is just being polite but really is losing interest in the conversation. "Gossip has it's uses, as for how I knew the man well we walked in similar circles, we both make donates to rehabilitating abused animals." A statement that maybe puts some light on her earlier statements about act of charity being just for show, maybe she knew more then she was willing to let on to a total stranger.
As foe the grounded man. "People make claims of this and that but one of it makes any logical sense, the dead and the living have no common cause, They do not interact. So if they are somewhere it has nothing to do with the likes of us." But then he actual snorts a genuine reaction not of mirth but derision. "You would stroke the go of a man you never meet when he he is no longer around to receive it?" An incredulous look comes with the statement. "Well meaning or not, is frankly a waste of your time, how self obsessed must a man be to try and impose his passing on the time of total strangers." While that might be a little harshly said, an open wake is a rather odd thing.
