Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair

[Aurora]

Raising a hand, she returns the wave to Phoenyx, “Hey! Not too bad, how about you?” looking to Chambers, “I have, believe I was telling you about him at my loft, so glad you got to meet him! Oh, and it was all good Mason, I promise you.” Adding a wink. “Tea sounds wonderful.”

Hearing a new voice, but not recognizing the face, “I don’t remember seeing you, but I was outside on the grill, I’m Madison.” Never hurts to be friendly.

Smirking to Guru, “Well, it would be my fourth so far with languages. I want to learn as many as I can.” Nodding as he listed his picks off, “Oh, ok. That one might be a bit tricky, but we can certainly keep an eye out for it. Or any hints where to look. Maybe with two sets of eyes we’ll come across something on your list!” sounding optimistic.

Offering another smirk, “I suppose the languages I study might make me a bit of a workaholic, only difference is, I know how to take breaks.” Teasing all the workaholics she knew at the table.

[Phoenyx]

She looks up and the older man joining them. "Yes... I didn't catch your name when you arrived. I am Alice, I work in our security office. You are?"

Phoenyx nods and thanks Chambers for the location. "I like learning about myths and cultures - It folds into my personal interests. The Death of Arthur is actually a compilation of what is supposed to be his entire life, from birth to death, by Sir Thomas Mallory. It is one of the more comprehensive compilations, and this copy is an older edition so I am hoping there will be fewer translation omissions or changes." She nods as Chambers says he feels best focusing on work. "I understand - I am much the same. I find historical myths and legends very interesting - they are my... passion." She couldn't imagine how she could dress that up as occult study plausibly, so it was better off not to try. Besides, it was still true.

She smiles as Guru does his introductions and Aurora greets the group of mages. "I am well, thank you. I have found a couple of interesting books - Though I suspect Josh's interest may be a little above a local fayre?" She smiles. "What are you looking for?" She asks Aurora.

[Cavendish]

"I way and am." Cavendish replies to the thoughtful mage. "It was a good first conversation to have that's for sure." His hand extends to shake Josh's and then the Ladder nods to Madison.

"I was to the side being introduced to the expectations for working in town." The Ladder makes a mental note to talk with Philip on that later. Then to the likely Arrow. "Ah, lets go with Cave for now. I work in public relations."

He shakes his head with a grin. "I'm here looking for either an old cookbook as a gift or something about old pagan rituals. It's a weird mix to be honest."

[Chambers]

Not a proud man the compliment coming from the Sharman so good looking he could be a sculpture is known for what it is nice words, but ultimately untrue. The Moros was average, plain, maybe a tad eccentric on occasion but the only figure he cut where ones made from stone. "That's kind of you to say Josh, but your rocking the formals far better then I ever could." Now that was the truth. He smirks. "Lucky maybe, or is that simply that we know ourselves well enough to fit our work around that?" Passion was not quite what we would call the fervour of his work, a certain deep stratification but not pleasure.

Not entirely sure what Aurora is responding to she talks to him, all eh had done was greet them an echo the arrows invite to tea. "Meet Josh?" He has to assume as the newer mage seems to be more of an unknown. "Yes I'm always glad to meet other members of the company." Doesn't this sound like some mafia movie right now. "I'm sure we will have a lot of interesting discussions if the cook out was anything to go by." The other mage had shown he knew his stuff, was able to think and contribute to academic topics. Something I don't get to do to much. "Philosophy is a pretty varied topic after all, and only one of very many." So why stop with that. "Have you had any luck finding something today?" Aurora was knowledgeable in many fields that was beyond question and naturally he was interested in where she turned that skill.

As Phoenyx corrects him on his understanding of her book. I should have known that. He smiles. "Right yes, thank you I blundered that a little didn't I." Having no problem playing of the mistake. "Well I hope you find something enlightening in its pages." Listening acutely as the arrow explains her interest. "Fewer and fewer take such an interest these days, it's wonderful there are still those who take the time to really dig into these myths and legends. We don't see many new ones cropping up do we." Unless urban myths count I guess, just not enough time to become history.

The new mage speaks and the Necromancer attention turns. Not the time and place to ask how he found the process. Given its relatively recent introduction into formal process a ladders insights would be most welcome. "It all seemed to go well, Are you settling in well?" There had been no problems to date but it never hurt to make sure. Chuckling a little. "I think wired mix can be catered to here with surprising ease." The assortment he had seen which was far from all, varied in every sense of the word.

[Guru]

"Well glad to have you Cave, someone needs to do the public relations." He offered with a laugh but was truly relieved there was someone filling those shoes right now. As everyone made their introductions to Cave he'd returned his attention to Aurora since it was he who had invited her. "Four?" Eyes wide with wonder, three was already a feat let alone the complexity they likely were. Then his head tilted, "Are either Latin or Greek?" It was where his mind first went to languages to study. Because Phoenyx certainly understood the importance of removing the issue of translation from a work.


That smile widened as his face grew a little red from Mason's compliment which overshadowed the fact he'd been the topic of conversation at some point. "I couldn't brave the full formal look though and that jacket is excellent." Though he had to hold his hands up in surrender with a laugh as he was reminded to take a break every now and then. "I think Mason's right, my breaks tend to be different kinds of work. That counts right?" Another laugh but it certainly justified it in his own mind,


"I'm curious to hear what's lost in translation compared to the original and what differences in tone there are." He was, not enough to learn French for it, but it wasn't his passion either. Though he had gone out of his way to learn Chemistry for that. The errant thought tugging at his lips once more before Alice's question snapped him back to the present. "My ultimate prey is not here but I'm sure I'll find interesting journals. Something from the Gold Rush, a bit of local history maybe. Does seem like we're a weird mix bunch on that front."

[Aurora]

A nod of agreement, “His might take a few different excursions to a couple various antique book stores I visit here and there, but I think he’ll find them.” She sounded confident. “I’m looking for a couple language books to add to my collection as well, mainly Hebrew and Aramaic, as something on astral journeys and planes. Came across a pod cast while traveling overseas and it was actually interesting, so wanted to do a bit of research on it.” Shrugging, “Quite a few intriguing theories about it.” Plus, it might prove useful.

“What language is the book translated from? Anything I can help with?”

“Always a good plan to know the expectations. Well, welcome to Sacramento then.”

A look to Chambers, “Nothing yet, but the day is young and the books are plentiful.” She had high hopes of at least one book.

A wide smile to Guru, “One just so happens to be Latin, but sorry, no Greek yet, though it is on my list.” Just lower on the list. At the formal talk, “See, now there has to be a formal event because I think you and Mason could totally brave and pull of a formal look with ease.” Totally. Maybe more Guru, but that was a different thing.

[Phoenyx]

Cave is given a small nod. She couldn't follow 'Public Relations'... the Free Council always seemed to be chatty.

Chambers gets a shrug. "Not many people know it. I tend to do a little research before I look for certain legends." She nods her head in agreement. "Modern legends is a thing I know little of. There tend to be people of those figures... D.B. Cooper and the like, famous for one thing or another."

She shrugs again at Guru's and Aurora's comments. "It's in French originally. I can't speak French. I'm just hoping an early translation will be closer to the original documents."

[Cavendish]

We almost comes out. But Cavendish catches himself. "I am ya, found a nice place and figuring out job stuff. And glad to hear. It's nice to be around good company again."

"Happy to do it." The ladder replies to the muscled man. "And looking forward to it. I'm interested to see how things work around here and what we can do with it." There's zeal in Cavendish's smile at those words.

[Chambers]

Given calling fashion choices brave was he was fairly sure a back handed compliment at best, it is fortunate he cares very little and takes no serious pride in the way he looks, besides it did not seem like a hidden slight had been the intention. "Well thank you." That seemed like the best way to move on from it. "Although I have no doubt all it would take it he right tie and you'd make the formal look work wonders." Compliment for compliment. "The gold rush?" Right yes. A little slower on the very well known reason for the movement west across America. "What would you be hoping to find from that time? Journals maybe?" Not an era or movement he had any real interest in, given he would in time learn the truth of gold, so it piqued curiosity at what the sculpted Sharman thought to gain from such things, a part of the question he leaves unspoken to avoid seeming overly interested.

Aurora might be putting that confidence she radiated to good use but he would avoid the topics of the astral himself. For all the common parlance such things got he felt no need to even risk inviting attention they could otherwise do without. "If your looking for Hebrew there are some vendors peddling religious texts, they might have dictionaries for translating?" It was not the longest shot, and she might already have looked but it was a step away from those selling books on languages and geography that had at least potential to yield something. "Or just material to translate on your own, they are bound to have something." That was a far more certain bet if the actual content of the book mattered less then it's practical use in learning or practicing the language.

Phoenyx's detour in what he has to assume are urban myths is a curious point. "I can't say I know who that is." This figure in particular going over his head. "But would say simply being famous for something is the same as a myth?" If so then crime lords and politicians the world over just became mythical figures. "Myths tend to invoke meaning and metaphor, regardless of their historical truth. While so much of what happens today is just crime or just a total fabrication." The latter actually closer to heart of being a myth he is well aware.

The new guy is not much of a speaker for the moment it would seem. No bad thing. "Good good." Not wanting to pressure him about the details of where and how he has settled. "Now. I must say your time of arrival is rather fortunate." A pause to consider his terminology. "I have been studying to take the exam that would enable me to legally represent members of the company." Avoiding the word lawyer in attempt to not be misunderstood. "I understand it's your branch who normally handles that, is it something you could facilitate?" It was no major problem if not but to keep it in house would be no bad thing.

[Guru]

"And probably a bit more capital, but if it takes awhile to find then I have time. Plus you never know what else you might find in your hunt. I think our language list are similar then." Hebrew and Aramaic, really going to the root of a lot of language which is a different avenue than he would take most certainly. As for the astral planes he could only point out all the books not to read. Cavendish got a big smile in his acceptance of the task, "Good, cause I tend to stick my foot in my mouth quite frequently." The laugh grew but only because the self deprecating joke had a tinge of truth to it.


He smiled along with Chambers, entirely unware of the backhanded nature of his compliment. Ironically putting proof to the pudding of his previous statement. When Chambers mentioned a tie, he pulled at his neckline which he'd kept unbuttoned. "Maybe, but not while wearing a white shirt." A laugh followed as it was impossible to hide the persperation the heat caused given his current choice of attire. Aurora's compliment making him smile more genuinely and warmly, a bit of tension eased at it.


"Journals primarily. There's a lot of local legend, lore, and history that's simply lost between the pages of time. Plus it was a time ripe with corruption, murder, mystery. Lot of unsolved mysteries." Phoenyx's mention of D.B. Cooper having him smile widely, "A good example of a more recent legend." While Chamber's words carried the weight of Truth with it, most of the mysteries had very boring answers for the most part. But if you never looked you would never know. "Myth, like with history, I feel like you need to keep in mind who your narrator is and the audience was intended to be." His inner Californian slipping a bit too much into his dialect.
