Dirt Nap is in some old tunnels under Sacramento. It is dark, but his eyes pick out the signs of prey. He moves slowly, and is able to stare into the eyes of a large rat. He makes a chittering sound, and the rat pauses, staring back.

Dirt Nap exerts his influence, commanding the rat to approach and be still, even as Dirt Nap picks it up, and lightly bites it, feeding, just sipping, really, controlling himself to leave it alive if weak.

It's a small amount, almost stirring up more hunger than it satisfies. He forces the beast to be patient. It is good practice. It costs nothing but time, and he has all night. He will do it again and again, like a gorge on an unlimited number of those tiny, delicate sandwiches at fancy parties. He smiles, and then finds the eyes of another, plump rat. The tunnels under the downtown restaurants seem to have the largest rats.
