Henry notices the larger-than-normal amount as he's pulilng out his own wallet. He stops, counts it, and shrugs before leaving half a minute behind Jordan. Calls to make, people to see.
It was a short walk to public transit. Jordan's car was in for a tuneup and oil change and would be ready later that afternoon. A transfer or two brought him back to his apartment on T Street.
Walking in, he had to look around again at his place. The comfortable modern furniture formed a remarkable contrast to the Renaissance art and facsimile illuminated manuscripts on the wall. He went to the cherrywood desk and looked at the telephone answering device; no messages, but that was to be expected at this hour. There was time for a bite to eat.
One English muffin and cranberry juice later, Jordan was back at the telephone, leaning back into the high-backed chair behind the desk. He put Vivaldi quietly in the background...it had to be quiet because of the composer's sometimes unexpected moves to forte or mezzo forte. The mystagogue picked up the telephone handset and started to dial.
Some of dad's contacts from the agency days could set up the telephone and email confirmations that he needed. Then he would do some Internet research on arms dealers, work a while in PhotoShop and produce the necessary business cards. He would leave the DOD IDs to Henry.
He reflected: "Sometimes, being an investigator is a little like being a con man."
He also thought about Ruby, and her offer to show him the museum collection. He should really call her at the museum, even if she is a more senior member of the Order here.
He finally thought: "It would be nice if the Church in Chicago made up their minds on that first-edition Chesterton, too."
