Betony was waiting for school to be out. It was her first step of looking into the missing persons cases she had come across, after the post on the board of course. She had figured the chaotic time of rushing back home and pushing through hallways would allow her to go about her investigation without drawing too much attention to herself.
Betony read her note over again. Marcus Hallano, sophmore, disappeared after basketball practice. Coach Mark Brannigan was the last to see him, after he sent the boy to the locker rooms.
She wasn't really sure what she was looking for. What was she expecting to find anyway? Some door or mirror that opened to the Hedge. A creature hidden behind the Mask. It had been some time since Mark Brannigan had vanished. What evidence could she hope to find? She wasn't that good at detective work, having never bothered to hone the skill.
Betony Rue flinched slightly as if she had been slapped just as the bell rang.
Doubt wasn't going to help. She would figure it out as she went. The first thing she had to do was find the locker room.
Betony Rue had attended the after school rush for three days now and was no further in finding out what had happened to the kid. She'd looked around the gym, had attended a team practice in the bleachers, talked to three teammates and even managed to poke around the locker room. She's even gone around asking doors, mirrors, and archways to open, in the hopes that her connection to the Wyrd might reveal a gateway to the Hedge.
It had all amounted to nothing; except being asked to leave by the coach after her stunt with the doorways. No one knew anything, the "crime scene" was at least a month old, and with her banishment she would unlikely be able to attend further practices or search for clues at the school.
So Betony Rue decided to give up on that particular avenue of investigation and try elsewhere.
