Conner remembered that the empty chair refered to children who passed away. This was prominent at the time in the graveyards of that age. This was likely the resting place to a lost boy.
    What does Conner do?

Conner's face grimaces in frustration. Why was the reference to lost children so important? Why was it nagging his consciousness? He looks back towards the broken obelisk. The arrow pointed up here, so either it was pointing past the gravestone, or there's another clue I'm not seeing. Or maybe there are no more clues necessary...

The Beast within begins speaking simple, carnivorous wisdom into Conner's thoughts.
The cypher was a projector, yes. But it was also a glorified flashlight. You used heightened sense to see in the dark, like a damn flashlight. There are no more clues to find; this IS Pope's grave. Except that doesn't make sense, this is a...

    Child's grave...

Conner's eyes widen and he looks back to the poem on the tombstone; a tombstone with no dates. Just a name and a poem about a lost child. Vincenzo knew quite a lot about Pope's history among Kindred, but he didn't say anything about Pope's human history...or when he was sired. No! That wouldn't make sense! The Lancea Sanctum has rules against siring children. Or he was sired by someone before and then underwent the Creation Rite. The Church would've damned him even as they welcomed him into their ranks, leaving him broken and ready for the Circle's corruption. And the poem...'an unfilled chair'; Pope's people lost their leader, but they vanished into the shadows.

A savage tension filled Connor's body, shame pulsing through him like wicked adrenaline. Perhaps there was a third option to be considered: that a phantom child's grave would go unnoticed. But Conner is so wrapped up in this horrific perversion of the supernatural that it consumes him.

Conner pulls himself over to the gravesite, draws his tonfa, and begins slamming it into the earth like a madman's jackhammer. He channels his curse into brute force and spills his stolen blood into his limbs, broken snarls escaping his clenched teeth as he prays silently that either he is terribly wrong, or that he can fulfill this task in time.

Conner destroys the ground over the child's tomb. This takes fifteen minutes of time as he disturbs the ground over the tomb, displaces the soil. Then he digs through the soil, creating a small mound of dirt on either side of him as digs until his tonfa hits the top of the coffin. Pope finds a small, child size coffin in the hole in the ground. He has found a child's tomb. There is no Pope here.

As the noise from his digging subsides, two things happen simutaneously. He hears soft footsteps in the direction he had entered: the narrow gate that leads to Sherah Israel.
The second thing that he notices are headlights coming up the road that loops through Waterlow Hill, the part of the cemetery he is currently standing in. The road is in sight of where he stands next to the dead boy's tome. He could crouch to avoid notice or hide himself better.
A glance around reveals Maxwell is not in sight.

Relief surges through Conner's whole body. The dark whispers were just that: whispers of nothing of consequence. Thank God. He wasn't looking forward to carrying a torpored child out of the cemetery.

Though he realizes that his frenzied action cost him valuable time, and now his senses pick up possible threats from two sides. Maybe it's the Coterie? If Maxwell were here he might advised an ambush, but the flashlight could possibly be cemetery security, which in turn could distract the Coterie from moving forward.

Conner crouches behind the gravestone to try and avoid notice. It appears he wasn't done praying that night.

Quinn picked up the other end of the trunk with Jack as they finished searching the area and were off to a new heading. She was either searching, or trying to keep watch. Something about the trunk kept bothering her. The Box's psychic scars revealed a perspective of Quinn herself being lowered into the box, looking up. The sense of something metallic. Blood. Blood was metallic to human taste buds. Enough of it, it would smell metallic. What did a Kindred need to wake from torpor? Blood. Quinn grew increasingly uncomfortable. Glancing with some trepidation at the box.
She did not voice her concerns yet. Just kept plotting along, and trying to keep a lookout as the Seneschal suggested. She smiled back at Jack, though it was more wistful, almost far away as her thoughts plagued her to much in the moment. She just kept playing it over and over and over again in her head.

So far Quinn felt confident they were headed in the right direction, and so far things had been smooth. For how long, though? An army of ghouls was certainly ominous enough. What was worse was the time crunch. They didn't have time to fight ghouls, and play Cagney and Lacey all goddamn night. They still had to find all the clues and the key to open the damn tomb, and hope the jack in the box did the trick. The only other source of blood around here was them otherwise.
    The goddamn box....

Connor perked up at the scent still being there. He was no expert at tracking by scent, but the fact that the smell only went one way meant that there was a very real possibility that they weren't alone in the cemetery. He draws the sword that Quinn had graciously given him. "Scent only goes one way, either they're still here or they left from another exit. Be prepared for confrontation either way." He says as they make their way in the 2 o'clock heading. He keeps both his eyes and nose open, not wanting to be the target of an ambush.

A white sedan with yellow lights on the roof and a mounted spotlight on the passenger side comes into view, driving along the road that curves through this section of the cemetery. The car has two men in security uniforms. One of the men leans over to start panning the spotlight over the side of Waterlow Hill. After a moment, the spotlight centers on the gravestone that Conner is hiding behind. Light is all around him - if he moves, surely he steps into the spotlight. The only reprieve is the gravestone he crouches behind.

This security patrol is no match for you in a confrontation. The true danger is present in breaches of the Masquerade. There's always some chance a neighbor coming home from the graveyard shift at the Texaco station notices something weird (like an empty white sedan with yellow lights on the roof) when she drives by.

Dead brown grass crunches under your feet. A gradual sloping hill here leads down to the cemetery wall, swallowed in stark vines and weeds that practically blend with the rusting razor-wire coiled at the top. This place has seen better nights. By the looks of it this was a handsome well-tended stretch of ground once. The tombs and stones here imply money and bundles of rotting flower stems lay forgotten at the feet of several communal, family markers. A cursory look shows stones here going back at least as far as 1920.
Anyone scanning notices that the ground by a small statuette of an empty chair, with an empty pair of shoes, has been recently disturbed. A hole has been dug (roughly, with an improvised tool) down to expose the top of an exposed child’s tome.

This is a contested roll to avoid notice by the security. Roll to remain concealed
Contested roll to notice Conner vs. Conner remaining hidden
Conner has made 1 success to hide on his turn. If your Wits + Composure (+auspex if used) exceeds 1, your character will notice a figure crouching behind a gravestone.)
Connor does not notice Conner, but can note the spotlight on the gravestone.

The clues couldn't be more clear. Thus far at least. Milton has no doubt that things will become more difficult the farther they go.

He follows Quinn and Connor in the 2 o'clock direction, focused on their hunt. So focused that he doesn't even recognize the low hum of an engine. Until the vehicle is almost on top of them, a spotlight cutting through the dark.

Milton attempts to duck behind a monument, but it is far too thin to truly hide him. He tries his hardest to obscure himself, but he's pretty sure his efforts do not bear fruit. Which doesn't really surprise Milton. He knows his strengths and this is not one of them.

    Stealth, failure

A quick, pointed glance at Quinn and Jacque, hoping one of them catches his eye. After all, they are carrying a very mysterious trunk with them through a midnight graveyard. At the very least, they can try to hide it before their group is overtaken.

He peeks around the marker, trying to get a better sense of the situation, but dreading what he will see.

This is why Jack enjoyed reconnaissance. It would have been nice to know the patrol schedule of the security, or to at least know if spotlight checks were normal or if something was tipping them off to investigate. "Behind a headstone," he whispered to Quinn, moving the chest to set directly behind the cover. He shot Milton an affirming glance before crouching down near their cargo.

    2 successes

Surveying the situation for a moment, he considered how the scenario would play out. No matter what, the chest couldn't be discovered at this moment. He looked to Quinn and deliberately moved his hand to touch it before it fades from sight. He'd hope she recognized what he did as a Shadow, but then again he'd met Mekhet before who abhorred the very nature of Auspex.

Conner wills himself to shrink behind the gravestone. It might not be enough, but at least it would buy him time to think of a plan.

If the guards move on, they'll run the risk of discovering Vincenzo and his crew. If they find me I can try talking myself out of it and removing them from the equation. And by 'remove' he meant make sure they left. Conner wasn't going to engage the guards or see them hurt without due reason. Still, with the Vitae he'd expended so far...
