    1 success

The lantern bearer coughs but manages to keep breathing. In his insanity he's turn between making sure the copies burn and making sure ALL the copies burn. He dips the larntern into the flame and the spilled oil catches, engulfing the lantern and the hand that hold it.

"It must burn!" he shouts and uses his blackening hand to throw a small portion of inferno at Gerrit, or more accurately, the book.

The flame catches... latches... and spreads onto Gerrit's backpack.

Worm meanwhile pulls the owner along, though his actual destination is unsure.

Gerrit takes 1 lethal, is on fire, and will take more damage on the Lantern Bearer's turn if it is not put out or the backpack ditched.

Owner failed his strolls to escape, so between you and the woman, you have enough strength to move him regardless.

    John can't take the smoke!

The man at the shelves can’t seem to stop coughing on the smoke and as his body fights to take in air, his fighting spirit drains. Like he can feel the smoke from the book pulling on his soul to come out with every hacking breath. He crouches low to the ground in an effort to get out of the blackness and heads in what he thinks is the direction of the door. The man Worm hit takes the same tactic, leaving only one of the original group of three that had been beating down the owner, still spreading the fire farther and farther as he heads deeper into the store’s bookcases and the choking smoke.

“No way out!” the owner gives a whimpering scream, still fighting off his rescuers and managing to slip their grip, only to fall helpless onto the floor.

The woman tries to haul him back to his feet but he squirms away.

“The window!” she shouts to Colonel Worm, pointing to the escape path she’d broken earlier for the crowd, now with smokie pouring out of it instead of a herd of people.

    Mien:
Leathery scars, bruises and scaly scabs cover the whole hairless body. There is a certain symmetry to the disfigurements, the color of the visible skin ranging from pale pink to purple and dark red. Lately patches of dark blue and black - frostbite - have appeared on his skin and some of the scabs have frozen over and crystalized.
His right hand shows a copper-coloured, wilted and flaky scar, engulfing most of his palm and the inside of his wrist. Next to frostbite and bruised scars it adds a third layer of wounds bore by the Ogre.

    Mantle:
Contrast seem to grow slightly more stark around Gerrit, the crisp clearness of a winter morning. Sometimes the sound of ice forming or breaking can be heard in a short, brisk snap. When using Contracts a subtle, biting cold can be felt around Gerrit - pins and needles prick both the Onyx and those close to him.

    Crown:
Solid, thick panes of clear ice symmetrically arranged around his head with fern frost at the base.
    Active Pledges

    Motley Pledge

Only a result of 10 on a die is considered a success. Should a given die result in no successes, the failure is considered to be a dramatic failure, though the oathbreaker may spend a point of willpower to negate this, making it a regular failure.

The smoke spread in his lungs, threatening to devour him from within just as the ink and the fire threatened to devour him from the outside. Panic and determined diligence made Gerrit hold on to his backpack even harder, while the mean and drug-addled laughter of his father rang in his ears.

Equipment: Wallet with some money, backpack - Copy of The Paradise of Shelesh (burned?).

    Colonel Worm

    Mask
Worm is tall, whip thin, and corded with muscle. He's got more than a few scars. His eyes are blue and wild. His dirty blond hair is often greasy and worn short in the front, longer in the back—what some may call a mullet. There's always a mischievous smile on his lips. His wardrobe is extensive and totally crazy, filled with second-hand costumery and bizarre outfits scavenged from thrift-bins. The clothes reflect his attitude: Colonel Worm loves to make a scene and leave a lasting impression, for better or worse.

    Mien
Worm's mien is quintessential Goblin: he is taller, thinner, and more scarred. His skin is a bright red and his eyes a glaucous white (with no discernible pupils). What little hair he has is also white. His ears and nose are pointed and his hands and feet are approximately doubled in size. His muscles stand out like lengths of rope beneath his skin.

Worm's world is reduced to a small, smoky aperture that seems to be continually tightening.

He's somehow fighting off the effects of the smoke. But that can't last forever.

That's when the woman points out the window. "Got it! The window!" He repeats, hoping John and Gerrit will hear and follow suit.

It's hard to tell where they are, with the smoke. And his struggle with the owner. As the man slips from his hands again, Worm tries to grab hold.

    failure

    But it's not enough.

"Help me get him up!" He yells to the woman. Looks up at her, and then around for Gerrit or John. Back to the owner.

    Got to keep moving.

John was struggling to breathe, through the smoke. That deep, hacking cough of only a seasoned smoker could have. It was heaving, heavy cough that wracked scarred, torn lungs. The smoke was thick and billowing but the orange glow of the flame, of the frame was unmistakable. No, no, no...and he panicked but the only thing he could do was struggle to move, to get closer to try and help. Worm's voice cut through the din and as much as he wanted the Owner out alive his duty was to his friend, everything else was secondary

Sorry I missed the previous post, can bump my init down in a delay. So John failed so all he did was move to Gerrit.

The man looks on with fascination and dread as he begins to watch Gerrit burn alive by his charred hand that he clutches to his chest. All copies aflame, he doesn’t even notice as the paper torn and thrown to the floor ignites from the sparks.

He laughs, like it's the only thing he can think to shield him against what he's done.

Gerrit takes another point of lethal from the fire.

The window at least brought in some fresh air letting John clear out the ink filled phlegm, were they destroying it or was it in everything now. The ashes feeling like dried ink on his skin. With the small bit of strength he had to help Gerrit. "It's me." Hands held out and open as he moved to help with the straps and get the pack off so the fire wouldn't consume his friend. They had to run before The Paradise consumed them.

The owner’s struggle turns inward as he takes in a lungful of cursed air. Even that though, is not enough for the woman to haul him away. While she is able to get hold, she can’t lift the man by herself. Tears stream from her eyes as she looks between Worm, the window, and the encroaching flames and smoke of Paradise.

There was a moment where blind panic ruled the Ogre's brain - he was suffocating, the flames on and around him made his nerves scream with searing pain and he was sure that this was just the painful trip back to Arcadia, that the book has finally gotten to him.

Serves you right. You were always too stupid for your own good.

    Breathe, Mason!

And suddenly he snapped out of this anxious mindset. He fought for his composure, fought his urge to breathe in quickly and deeply and lowered his head a bit. "Thank you Lisa." He muttered between wheezes and coughs. There was some oxygen left and losing his head wouldn't get him out of here. He gritted his teeth against the pain and dropped to the ground, still holding onto his backpack. Maybe this was the only lead they had to find out what was happening - even with it being partly burned, they might need it. He could bear the pain,
    That's the spirit, shit-for-brains.

if it meant helping out the others.

On the ground he tried to extinguish the flames that were licking all over him. He just then realized that John was coming for him and at first he took the thin, inconspicuous man for an illusion, for another trick up his Keeper's sleeve. No, he's real. He's my friend and "He's real." He laid on the ground, hoping he wouldn't get trampled or set aflame in the time it took him to get up again.
