"You'd be surprised how quickly and easily trust is handed over when somebody needs something from you," she sighed. "Clients will open up their entire lives to me, thinking I can help them get what they want in the courtroom. A big settlement, social justice, vengeance. It's disheartening, in a way. I do try my best to be worthy of their trust."

Her posture was more relaxed now, though she did keep one eye on the Guardian as she spoke. That particular trust would indeed need to be earned. "It's what it sounds like. I work to help those whose rights have been violated. Women fired for getting pregnant. Gay couples denied adoption services. The list is depressingly long."

"Right", he says. What is a right really? For a Theurgist, Awakened to a world of Forces, only Might Makes Right. The Strong Do What They Want, and the Weak endure What they Must.
The Word is Strong when it speaks of realized Belief.
"It is a worthy endeavour", but more than a statement, it sounds like a question.

"I should hope so. Nobody should be held down by the pettiness of others." Imperium is the right of humanity. How can they ever reach Awakening if they're still oppressing and harming one another over pointless differences? Those spiritual shackles had to broken, even if one at a time. "If I can help free them of that, if only in a small way, I consider it time well spent."

Another sip of her coffee, "What do you do with yourself when you're not studying late night diners?"

"I'm a roughneck. Oil extraction", of course it's a lie, but he's used to telling and being told lies by young women. Especially when it comes to his occupation, the details of his past allegiance are best relegated to a footnote.

Winter would have to try harder to lie to a Mastigos lawyer. She didn't buy it for an instant. It was a solid attempt, at least.

However, she decided to just play along, and maybe test for holes in the fiction. It was unlikely he'd tell her the truth, anyway. Guardians were like that. Might as well enjoy the ride.

"Really? How rugged." Naga smiled conspiratorially, "Big rigs at sea? Texas fields?"

"Very big. It's a tough job, but somebody gotta do it. Though, we're the old guards. Dying fast", he replies absent-mindedly. It's a bold faced lie, but a man gotta have his fun. A smirk threatens at the corners of his mouth. "Who's the most heinous criminal you ever defended?"

"Oh? Family business fading in the onslaught of newer green energies? The classic American tragedy?" He was good, she had to admit. Spinning out his yarn with a straight face... at least until that faint hint of a smirk. Good, she wasn't the only one enjoying this.

The Ladder flashed a full smile. "I'm from Los Angeles. That would be a close contest. A lot of famous, wealthy worms needed their indiscretions cleaned up. I could tell you the most heinous one I refused to defend. Let's just say it involved a TV star who got caught with his pants down in the dressing room of one of his younger costars." She shook her head and took a sip of her coffee. "Not enough money in the world to touch that one."

"Your colleague claimed to be from Los Angeles as well", he remarks. He notices her careful arrangement of words. This one she mentioned was the most heinous of those she choose to not defend, not implying that she hadn't assumed the defense of much worse criminals.
And not enough money.
He nods along, she was eluding his question.

Of course she was eluding the question. Answering that would give away too much of her identity. At least, it would make learning her identity too easy. She wasn't about to hand that kind of information over.

A more enticing subject presented itself, "Is that so? How long ago was this?"

"Last year, give or take a few months", he says before taking another sip from his mug, "Easy to check to be fair. If memory serves me right, licensed attorneys are required to upload their profile on the California State Bar website".
